A major new exhibition: Titanic Stories

NEW at the National Maritime Museum, Cornwall is an exhibition, Titanic Stories, which will examine the stories of the Titanic’s momentous sinking on 15 April 1912, re-appraising many of the myths, controversies and assumptions that still linger around one of the most well-known historic events of the 20th century.

Working in collaboration with private collectors from overseas and national museums in the UK, ‘Titanic Stories’ presents rare and never-seen-before objects and items, as well as retelling the personal stories of many of the survivors, victims and descendants of the #Titanic disaster, including those from #Cornwall. The exhibition will offer new contextual information around the iconic sinking and what happened next.

Alongside documentary and personal photographs, letters, newspaper cuttings, compelling items such as a handkerchief waved from a lifeboat and a First-Class passenger list found in the pocket of a victim, will intimately bring this historic voyage back to life.

Australian Maritime Museum to offer Chinese language tours

TO celebrate Chinese New Year 2018, the Australian National Maritime Museum is launching a new, specially-designed product to welcome its Chinese visitors, the Endeavour Highlights Tour. From 1 February – 28 February 2018, the museum will offer Chinese language guided tours of the museum’s main galleries, exhibitions and attractions.

To be delivered in Mandarin, the tours will run three times per day, seven days per week and will feature a visit to Captain Cook’s Endeavour replica, moored at the museum on iconic Darling Harbour. They will also include guided tours of a range of compelling exhibitions including Passengers (Australia’s immigration story by sea), Navigators (a showcase of Australia’s relationship with Asia and Europe, featuring maritime navigation instruments, charts and maps) and Gapu-Monuk Saltwater (the museum’s recently opened Indigenous exhibition exploring the landmark sea rights case of North-East Arnhem land). 

Visitors on these tours will also have a photo opportunity on board the Endeavour with a 18th Century Captain’s hat, ideal for sharing on WeChat. And, in keeping with this year’s Chinese zodiac Year of the Dog, they will also have the chance to meet the museum’s resident canine, Bailey Haggarty, famous for chasing the seagulls from the museum’s ships and wharves.

Captain Bligh: Myth,Man,Mutiny Exhibition

THE exhibition runs from March 17 to December 31 at the National Maritime museum in Falmouth and remembers a notable West Countryman and significant national figure, in the 200th anniversary year of his death. 

It tells a story that challenges the more commonly known Hollywood depiction and brings to life one of the greatest small boat survival stories in history featuring relics from the voyage and a specially built reproduction of the Bounty launch, giving a very real sense of the situation of the 18 men who sailed it over 3600 nautical miles across the Pacific.

Following on from previous exhibitions at the Museum, such as Viking Voyagers, with #CaptainBligh the Museum once again takes a globally important story, and explores the Cornwall context, in this case Bligh’s Cornish roots.

The in-house build of the Bounty launch is part of a programme of reconstructions of historical craft in the Museum’s own boat building workshop.

The Vikings are back!

THE NATIONAL MARITIME MUSEUM in Falmouth brings the #Vikings to #Cornwall in an exhibition that runs until February next year: Viking Voyagers.  

The #exhibition, featuring nationally and internationally historically significant artefacts, explores what is behind the popular myth of the bloodthirsty raiders, what it meant to become a Viking, and how their mastery of maritime technology was the secret to their success.

Their power was built on their knowledge of boatbuilding and their seafaring skills, enabling them to sail across the Atlantic’s to Newfoundland and Iceland, down to the Mediterranean, and east to Ukraine and Russia.

Visions of horned helmets, unkempt beards and fearsome raiding fighters come to mind when thinking of the Vikings. But the exhibition dispels the myths: just like us they wore jewellery, combed their hair, and many were entrepreneurs, using smaller boats and ships to do business.

Archaeological finds on display include weaponry, jewellery, household implements, and slave chains and coins.

Richard Doughty, Director of National Maritime Museum Cornwall says: ‘This state-of-the-art show has taken years to develop. You might think you know the Vikings, but you will have never experienced them in the way this new exhibition promises. All I can say is watch out, the Vikings are coming!’

Dr Tehmina Goskar, Exhibitions registrar at the museum adds: ‘The story of the Vikings is incredibly alluring. Not only have they left us with a legacy of beautiful storytelling in their sagas, but also an astonishing material culture. Above all, the Vikings were sailors, their men, women and children thrived because of their skills with boats and seafaring, so with our harbour location, celebrating the sea and small boats, there is no better place to come to hear their stories.’
