Goa to tap river tourism sector

#GOA is planning to promote its rivers to attract more tourists and help transportation within the state. 

‘The state government will give priority to waterways and we have scope to develop waterfronts’ says Goa’s chief minister Laxmikant Parsekar.

Goa has 400 miles of viable waterways, and an additional 155 miles that could also be utilized if they are dredged and their navigation channels are deepened.

‘We should use our rivers as waterways and further reduce the pressure on our roads. We could also build river jetties in coastal villages and the hinterland so that the pressure created by tourism can be spread across Goa and not just along the beaches’, says Mr Parsekar. ‘Once we have investment, we could have job creation and diversify tourism in the hinterland from the coast.’

Turkey specialist tour operator fails

TURKEY AND GOA specialist Jewel in the Crown Holidays has ceased trading and gone into liquidation.

The company, based in Crawley, England, had been trading for 29 years.

The company said in a statement: ‘The business to Turkey has been challenging for the last two years. We had hoped that the political situation in Turkey would improve, but sadly this has not happened.’

Boom year for Goa tourism

#GOA welcomed 5.3 million visitors last year, up by more than 30% on the 2014 total. 

An e-tourist visa scheme, now available at Goa Airport, helped to boost international arrivals. Close to 50,000 e-visas were issued at the airport, mostly to visitors from the UK, US, Russia, and the UAE.

Goa’s tourism minister Dilip Parulekar said: ‘We are delighted to know that despite various negative geo-political situations across the globe, tourism in Goa is not hit in any way. We have received a good response from foreign and domestic tourists in 2015. Our new initiatives in marketing are showing substantial results and we are optimistic that tourists will choose Goa as their destination for holidaying.’
