Aids for safe skiing

TO help safety-conscious skiers plan ahead. Airport Parking & Hotels has created a guide comparing safety regulations at some of the world's most popular resorts.

The research compares regulations and insurance options at 14 #ski resorts, including Breckenridge in Colorado, 3 Vallees in France, and Verbier in Switzerland, and looks at call-out costs for skiing accidents.

Ski insurance policies vary between each resort, with 12 of the 14 resorts included in the research offering specific cover options for visitors. French resorts including Chamonix, La Plagne, and Les Deux Alps provide the Carte Neige Insurance from £29 to £44, which covers medical and rescue fees for on and off-piste skiing and immediate replacement of lost lift passes. Alternatively, Verbier in Switzerland offer Snow Assist insurance for £3 per day or £66 per season, which covers refunds for rescue costs, ski rentals, lift passes, and skiing lessons.

Three of the resorts – La Plagne, St Moritz in Switzerland, and Valle d'Aosta in Italy – charge a call-out rescue fee. The fee varies from £140 at Valle d'Aosta to £569 at La Plagne. In Vail, Colorado, fees apply when a traveller has to be taken to hospital by ambulance, whereas rescues are free across the Mont Blanc Massif in France unless an airlift has to be arranged.

The Italian resort Cortina d'Ampezzo has the 'SkiCortina' app including the resorts' essential telephone numbers and ski slope details as well as displaying any risk of avalanches.

The research can be found in the Know Before You Go section of the APH website at www.aph.com/skisafety

What do we know about Britain?

BRITAIN has some of the planet’s most significant and interesting sites and places of interest, but a survey by Mercure Hotels shows that many of its citizens know nothing about them.

The survey of more than 2,000 Brits revealed that:
  • A third identified London’s Marble Arch as the Arc de Triomph in Paris
  • A quarter thought the Lake District's Derwent Water was in New Zealand
  • More than a quarter confused St Paul's Cathedral with The Vatican in Rome
  • A third identified Brighton Pavilion as the Taj Mahal
It also shows many Brits believe fictional places such as Coronation Street’s Weatherfield, Eastenders' Albert Square, Downton Abbey, and Harry Potter's Platform 9 ¾ Kings Cross are real places in the UK.

Flying with kids?

WITH the school summer holiday period approaching, Airport Parking and Hotels (APH) has compared facilities available for parents travelling with infants and children on major airlines. The research is available in a comprehensive guide that can be found in the Know Before You Go section of the APH website … at www.aph.com/childrensfacilities.

The research compares the facilities for infants and children across 20 major airlines including Aer Lingus, British Airways, Cathay Pacific, and Virgin Atlantic, highlighting the on-board changing facilities, children's meals, difference in cost for a child's ticket, and the rules for children when travelling unaccompanied.

Of the 20 airlines researched, nine airlines charge an infant fare when sitting on a parent's lap at 10% of an adult fare, whereas the remaining 11 airlines allow infants to travel on an adult's lap at no additional cost. Meanwhile, for a child's fare, the rates differ depending on the airline. For example, for travellers flying with American Airlines, a child's fare is 25% of an adult's fare, but with Atlantic Airways, it’s 50%.
