Just a 45 minute boat ride . . .

FITZROY Island Resort will undergo a $2.5 million refurbishment and expand its Great Barrier Reef experiences to include diving and sunset cruises. Rainforest-clad Fitzroy Island is just a 45-minute boat ride from Cairns city and where you will find secluded Nudey Beach, Australian’s Best Beach for 2018.

A National Park with rainforest walks and a summit hike to the lighthouse, the island is home to the volunteer-run Cairns Turtle Rehabilitation Centre where visitors can meet Jet, an eight-year-old green sea turtle rescued off Fitzroy Island in July 2017. Fitzroy Island Resort is also supporting the Reef Restoration Foundation with the establishment of the Great Barrier Reef’s first offshore coral nursery in the island’s waters.

Down Under . . .

TWO of Australia’s natural World Heritage sites – the Great Barrier Reef and the Daintree Rainforest – feature in a brand new package offered by Majestic Whales Encounters, which will see travellers swim with dwarf minke whales, snorkel on the famous reef, and stay in a luxurious rainforest treehouse.

The ‘Swim with Dwarf Minke Whales’ 10-night package is the first Queensland trip offered by Australian company, Majestic Whales, which is known for its #whaleswim #holidays in Tonga and now expanding into other whale-rich waters, including Norway and #Queensland.

Beginning on June 28, 2019, the package aims to coincide with dwarf minke whales’ annual migration to the waters known as the Ribbon Reefs – the only place in the world where you can swim with them. Their inquisitive nature brings them close to boats, divers and snorkelers, often swimming just a metre away as they playfully lift their heads out of the water to observe the boats, tail-slap the water and breach.

Best beach

Whitehaven Beach in the Whitsundays, Australia, .......
has again taken out the top gong for the South Pacific's Best Beach in the 2015 TripAdvisor Travellers' Choice Awards.

It’s also ranked in the Top 10 of the world's best beaches.

Whitsundays Marketing and Development Limited executive director Jeff Aquilina said: ‘It is a tribute to the stunning natural beauty of the Whitsundays and our local tourism operators who allow visitors to experience the exceptional beauty and magic of Whitehaven Beach, and the Whitsunday Islands, while keeping it clean and preserving this natural wonder at the same time.

‘We have an array of amazing visitor experiences on offer here in the Whitsundays, but feeling the soft silica sands below your feet on Whitehaven Beach and taking a dip in the crystal clear waters is certainly a must-do.’

In the Great Barrier Reef, the turquoise waters and silica sand of Whitehaven Beach stretch over four miles along Whitsunday Island, the largest of the 74 islands in the Whitsundays, off the Queensland coast.

Save the reef, says tourists

ACCORDING to a study by James Cook (JCU) University in Australia, tourists are more worried about oil spills ruining the Great Barrier Reef than the possibility that it might lose its World Heritage status.

A team of researchers from JCU’s Business School, surveyed 980 visitors to Far North Queensland.

It found the tourists, mainly those from overseas, were very concerned about the impact of damage to the Reef either through climate change or from oil spills. Loss of the reef’s World Heritage was less of a concern than oil spills and climate change.
