WITH rapid development, Shuangliu International Airport ranks in the world's leading airports. Since its first international air route in 1987, Shuangliu International Airport has opened 109 routes, connecting five continents.

While promoting the airport economy, Shuangliu is actively building a beautiful airport and improving the level of green resources. Up to now, the green area in Shuangliu District has reached 4030.06 hectares, of which parks cover 557.47 hectares.

In the future, Shuangliu will build "Airport Flower Field Park" at Muma Mountain, it will also speed up the construction of airport greenway, carefully lay out various urban parks, green landscape and rural pastoral landscape, and form the regional ecological pattern, in a bid to ensure that the per capita park green land area will reach 16m2 by 2020.

Go wild in Scotland

SCOTLAND'S international reputation as a key destination for experiencing world-class wild landscapes and outstanding wildlife is to be boosted by Trees for Life joining a prestigious and growing European association of rewilding projects.

The conservation charity was invited to become a member of the European Rewilding Network – placing its restoration of the globally unique Caledonian Forest in the Highlands, especially in Glen Affric and Glenmoriston, firmly on the European map.

A key focus of the network is to show how rewilding – the restoration of damaged natural ecosystems – can benefit economic development, including through nature-based tourism, wildlife watching and volunteering opportunities.

A review of Scotland’s wildlife tourism sector by VisitScotland this year highlighted how the country’s landscapes, nature and wildlife are key reasons for people to choose it as a travel destination. Research in recent years has also shown that wildlife tourism generates an estimated £276 million a year for the Scottish economy.

Ten of the best in Britain

SWEEPING across beaches, hills and ancient remains, Britain’s 46 Areas of Outstanding Natural Beauty (AONB) showcase the island’s most spectacular landscapes. Here are some of the highlights:

Gower Peninsula – The very first AONB, near Swansea, Wales, has been protected since 1956. Rhossili Bay is regularly voted one of the world’s best beaches. It has a 39-mile coastal path.

Cotswolds – Fifty years ago, the beauty of the Cotswolds was protected by being designated an AONB. With historic villages made from local honey-coloured stone, alongside meadows and rivers – including the source of the Thames – it’s a quintessentially English landscape. There’s a walking trail that covers the entire 90-mile length of the Cotswolds, starting in Chipping Camden in Oxfordshire and running south to Bath in Somerset, with plenty of pubs on the route.

Northumberland Coast – South of the border with Scotland, things get rugged here. There are cliffs and sweeping beaches studded with ancient forts such as Bamburgh. You’ll also find the Farne Islands, home to thousands of grey seals, and Holy Island, which is linked to the mainland by a causeway that disappears as the tides rise.

Isles of Scilly – These are a chain of small, almost other-worldly islands, surrounded by white sand beaches. As the most southerly part of the United Kingdom – and part of Cornwall – spring arrives here first each year. There are five inhabited islands (mostly car-free) and over a hundred that aren’t.

Reach them via ferries from Penzance or flights from Newquay, Lands’ End, and Exeter.

Lincolnshire Wolds – A hidden gem in the Midlands that even many British people don’t know about – and beautifully unspoilt. It’s great cycling country. Under three hours from London by train, it has a strong Viking history. Stand on top of the aptly named Wolds Top for views across salt marshes and over to Lincoln Cathedral.

Mendip Hills
– These Somerset hills take in steep gorges with intricate cave systems (many of which can be explored). This is the home of both Cheddar Cheese and Glastonbury Tor.

Arnside & Silverdale – It’s hard to pick out just one area of the Lake District for its beauty, but this part near Morecambe Bay in Lancashire is worth searching out. To fully experience its stillness and serenity, visit one of its nature reserves. In spring you’ll find wild daffodils, while summer brings butterflies, autumn red deer, and migrating birds in winter.

Wye Valley – Where Wales meets England, this is a 72-mile stretch of river between Chepstow and Hereford, studded with woodland and wildlife. Head to Coppett Hill and you’re likely to see peregrine falcons in the sky. Medieval monks built Tintern Abbey and its impressive ruins have attracted tourists from the 18th century onwards.

Causeway Coast – The Giant’s Causeway is the stuff of myth and legend. A series of dark, mostly hexagonal basalt columns rising from the ground with the sea crashing against them, it’s unlike any other landscape on the planet. Caused by a volcanic eruption approximately 60 million years ago, the Causeway Coast is now mostly owned by the National Trust, and normally an hour’s drive from Belfast.

East Devon – With lush farmland and streams meandering towards the sea near Budleigh Salterton, this part of England’s Jurassic coastline is studded with fossils. East Devon is famous for its thatched cottages, cream teas, and small harbours.

Greater Barcelona promo launches in Spain

THE tourist boards of #Barcelona, Barcelona Province, and Catalunya have joined forces to unveil ‘Greater Barcelona’ – a tourism proposition which promotes a Barcelona that is both the city and beyond.

‘Greater Barcelona’ has been designed to showcase that Barcelona is much more than the well-known Gaudi streets and urban boardwalks of the Catalan capital. It’s an offering which celebrates the culture, landscape, gastronomy, and history of Sitges, Calella, Manresa, Berga, and many more unique locations. It also aims to change the common perception that Barcelona is only a city, when in reality it offers visitors much more.

As the capital of Catalonia – ‘the European Region of Gastronomy 2016’ – Barcelona has 29 Michelin-starred restaurants, holding 35 stars between them. The area is also home to four Denominations of Origin when it comes to wine and Cava. The stretching vineyards are easily accessible from the city centre.

For families that love to be by the seaside or for those in search of a little rest and relaxation, Costa Barcelona has miles of golden sandy beaches. The perfect backdrop to a family day out, Barcelona’s 62 miles of beaches offer sailing, yachting, kayaking, surfing, and scuba-diving.

Our Britain, and what little we know of it

RESEARCH by interior design specialists Murals Wallpaper has discovered that many in Britain don’t recognise the beautiful views available on their own doorstep.

In two surveys, the company showed 750 people two photographs, both taken along different parts of the Cornish coast, and asked: Where do you think this picture was taken?

For the image on the left, 29% believed it to be in New Zealand and 8% thought it was taken in Canada, whilst 5% chose the French coast.

For the second image on the right, 24% chose New Zealand and 6% selected Canada, with 4% opting for France.

When the two results are combined, it means that almost half of the total people surveyed weren’t able to recognise two beautiful views from their own backyard in the UK.

The company has launched a campaign designed to show people everywhere that you don’t have to travel far and wide to experience incredible sights.

Richard Wilde, managing director of Murals Wallpaper, hopes that the rising popularity of staycations will help people to appreciate what their own country has to offer. ‘Unfortunately, the UK can often be overlooked as an attractive holiday destination and we perhaps underappreciate just how wonderful some parts of our homeland are. However, we hope that the growing number of people choosing staycations over flying abroad will help people recognize the outstanding natural beauty of the UK.’

Emma Warren, owner of a five-star glamping site in Somerset, says it’s the ease of travel and the larger variety of scenery that makes the UK increasingly appealing to holidaymakers. ‘What’s not to like about a staycation in the UK? No long flights or queuing to get places; time your journey right and you can even avoid most of the traffic queues. You can take everything you need with you and not worry about excess baggage charges.

‘The other bonus is that the UK has so many different regions and landscapes that you don’t have to go far to discover something completely different from your last UK holiday. From the flat Fens to the rolling hills of Somerset and from beaches to mountains - we’ve got it all in hand.’

Capability Brown at Blenheim

2016 MARKS the 300th anniversary of the birthday of the landscape gardener, Lancelot 'Capability' Brown. #BlenheimPalace, Oxfordshire, is one of the best places to see his extraordinary work; it has 2,000 acres of landscaped parkland, which the gardener spent 11 years creating.

The landscape setting he devised in the 1760's provided such a sublime form of beauty and harmony that every generation of the Marlborough family has endeavored to preserve it.

Many landscape historians state that the landscaping at Blenheim Palace is the finest example of Brown's work. The 2,000-acre park delivers beauty across all seasons; from lawns brimming with daffodils in spring, greens of the trees transforming into a myriad of warm tones from summer to autumn, to the blanket of frost and mist rising from the lake in winter.

Blenheim has a 2016 calendar of activity planned to celebrate Brown’s work, from specialist garden tours, a temporary exhibition, a self-guided trail and guided walks.

The exhibition, open in February, reveals Brown's work at the palace across the 11 years he was commissioned (1763-1774) through detailed accounts of how he designed and executed such a masterpiece through to photography, drawings, equipment, and costumes.

Brown’s nickname came about for his common phrase: ‘This garden has capabilities to improve.’
