Messel’s Mustique

AS one of the foremost stage designers of the 20th century, Oliver Messel was an unexpected yet inspired choice of architect for the groundbreaking houses built on #Mustique, when Colin Tennant started to develop the Caribbean island in the 1960's. 

Between 1960 and 1978, Messel designed and oversaw the building of 18 houses on Mustique, and within the walls of these unique and flamboyant villas his legacy lives on. Each building has a stage-like feel, based around a great room with views of the magnificent swimming pools, beaches, and gardens behind which they are set.

These are some of them:

Clonsilla – With a beachfront position with its own private cove, this villa is one of the island's original gems and is nestled in lavish, manicured gardens. From £178 per person per night based on 10 sharing. Six staff and one private vehicle.  

Zinnia – Light, airy and quintessentially Mustique, this villa commands views over the island and offers guests a dramatic backdrop to the perfect island experience. From £154 per person per night based on 12 sharing. Six staff and two private vehicles.

  

Phibblestown – On a rocky bluff, this newly-renovated villa offers open-plan, breezy living and is reminiscent of all Messel's designs.  From £229 per person per night based on 10 sharing. Five staff.

Flights from London to Barbados are available from £520 per person return. Domestic flight transfers from Barbados to Mustique cost £350 per adult and £270 per child for the round trip.
