Virgin Trains smashes its records for travel between Liverpool and London
VIRGIN Trains has broken new records for passengers travelling on its west coast route between #Liverpool and London.
As the intercity operator celebrates 20 years of operating the west coast route, new figures show it carried 1,765,874 customers between Liverpool and London in 2016/17, an increase of 11.2% compared to the same period the previous year (1).
The new figures have coincided with punctuality reaching its highest ever level since privatisation and the introduction of Virgin’s revolutionary new onboard entertainment streaming service, BEAM.
The growing availability of £17 fares between Liverpool Lime Street and London Euston has played a big part in encourage more customers to leave the car at home and travel by #train, both for business and staycation trips.
The increase in journey numbers has also coincided with the growing appeal of Liverpool as a destination. For the first time ever, more Virgin Trains carried more passengers to the city than the capital (889,000 in 2016/17, 13,000 higher than the number of journeys made from Liverpool to London).

Virgin Trains to boost Edinburgh-London route
AN IMPROVED timetable with 42 additional trains connecting the UK and Scottish capitals every week has been launched by Virgin Trains as part of a £140 million investment programme for the east coast route. This will add 22,000 seats to the weekly capacity, and mean there is a near half-hourly service between the capitals.
Virgin Trains says it has already seen bookings for journeys across the border in the first two months of the new timetable increase by 15% compared with the same period last year.
The uplift in journeys was welcomed by the Secretary of State for Scotland David Mundell, who launched the timetable in Edinburgh today. He said: ‘Good connectivity between London and Scotland is vital for our economic security, so this improved Virgin service is really good news. More trains between Edinburgh and London – and all the stops in between – will mean more choice and flexibility for rail travellers in Scotland. It will make it easier for Scottish businesses to reach customers and markets right across the UK. These new services will also bring more visitors to Scotland, helping to boost jobs and prosperity.’
The timetable was also welcomed by civic leaders in Newcastle, which has benefited from the increased cross-border connectivity.

Virgin Trains signs up to climate change campaign
VIRGIN TRAINS has signed a pledge to reduce its carbon footprint and contribute to global targets to limit climate change.
The Railway Climate Responsibility Pledge is being presented at the United Nations Climate Summit in Paris this month by the International Union of Railways (UIC).
A ‘Train to Paris 2015’ campaign by the UIC is promoting trains as one of the most energy efficient modes of transport, but acknowledges the responsibility of the industry to make further improvements.
David Horne, managing director for Virgin Trains on the east coast, signed the pledge. It commits the business to: reducing specific energy consumption and CO2 emissions; stimulating shifts to rail in national and international markets; communicating climate-friendly initiatives undertaken by the company; and reporting data on energy consumption regularly to the UIC.
Horne said: ‘As a member of the UIC, it is very important for us to make this commitment to help reduce our energy consumption. Though rail travel is one of the most efficient in terms of emissions, we will continue to work with our partners and stakeholders to improve things further and contribute to the UIC’s global targets to reduce and prevent climate change.’
