English attractions see visitor numbers continue to grow





VISITS to England’s attractions increased by four percent in 2014, according to #VisitEngland’s Annual Attractions survey. The figures continue the growth seen in 2013, highlighting the contribution they make to the tourism industry and the country’s economy … worth £106 billion in total. 

The East of England saw the biggest rise – up ten percent year-on-year – but the North-West (up six percent), North-East (seven percent), West Midlands (five percent) and the South-East )six per cent) also saw above average growth.

The #TowerofLondon remains the most visited attraction in the paid-for category with 3.1 million visits, an increase of 6.5 percent on last year, followed by Hylands House and Estate in Essex with 1.9 million visits, and #WestminsterAbbey with 1.8 million visits.

Tower of London tops TripAdvisor’s UK landmark poll

THE Tower of London has been named the best-rated landmark in the UK – and eleventh in Europe – in the Travellers’ Choice awards for Landmarks announced by TripAdvisor.

Edinburgh Castle came second in the UK rankings.

#London was a big winner in the UK rankings, with six of the UK’s top ten: #TowerofLondon, #BigBen, House of Parliament, Westminster Abbey, Tower Bridge, and Buckingham Palace taking first, fourth, fifth, sixth, seventh, and eighth place respectively.

Edinburgh ranked as the second-biggest winning city in the UK with two of the UK’s top three landmarks – Edinburgh Castle and Royal Yacht Britannia – taking second and third place.

The Top 10 in the Travellers' Choice world rankings were:

1. Angkor Wat - Cambodia
2. Machu Picchu - Peru
3. Taj Mahal - India 
4. Sheikh Zayed Grand Mosque Center - Abu Dhabi
5. Basilica of the Sagrada Familia - Barcelona
6. St. Peter's Basilica - Vatican City
7. Milan Cathedral (Duomo) - Milan
8. Alcatraz - San Francisco
9. Corcovado - Cristo Redentor - Rio de Janeiro
10. Golden Gate Bridge - San Francisco
