Holiday? What holiday?

UK workers will spend a total of 3,171,550 days of their holidays on work activities, according to research by Kwik Fit Mobile.

Its study revealed that 46 percent of those working full or part time spent part of their holidays last year on work activities such as checking e-mails, making work phone calls or writing and reading documents. Each of these holidaymakers spent an average of five hours and 24 minutes on work-related activity.

Although women workers were less likely than men to spend vacation time working, those who did catch up with work on holiday spent longer doing so. The average holiday time women spent on work last year was six hours 22 minutes, compared to four hours 19 minutes for their male counterparts.

The research also found that work has an impact on where one in four UK workers go on holiday. Fifteen percent say they need to have a good Wi-Fi or internet service whilst they’re away, 11 percent need a good mobile signal, and four percent stay only in hotels which have good business facilities.

More seats to Turkey

THOMSON and First Choice airlines have announced that in summer 2015 they will be increasing capacity at Cardiff airport by 5,000 seats through the re-introduction of the route to Antalya, Turkey.

Warning on driving in Spain

FOREIGN holidaymakers renting cars in Spain this year need to beware they don’t get caught out by changed driving laws and harsher penalties for traffic offences.

They include:

• Fines of up to €500 (£396), and the loss of six licence points, for being just 1km per hour above the speed limit.

• The Spanish police do not now need to stop a car in order to prosecute; they can just note its registration number.

• A minimum fine of €1,000 (£792) if drivers are found to have more than double the drink drive limit of 0.5mg, unless you passed your test within the last two years, or are a professional driver, in which case it is 0.3mg. The fine also applies if you are a repeat drink -driving offender, if you refuse to take the breathalyser test, or if you are driving under the influence of drugs.

'Driving abroad can be daunting for some motorists,' said Ken McCall, managing director at Europcar. 'We advise drivers to familiarize themselves with the driving laws of any countries they are visiting if they’re planning to drive either their own car or a hire car. For instance, in France it is a requirement for drivers to carry a breathalyser kit in their vehicle; in other countries there’s a zero alcohol limit. 

Whichever country you are visiting, don’t get caught out by assuming that foreigners will be exempt from the law. Make sure you do your homework before arriving at your destination.'

Up in smoke!

THE British Fireworks Championships return with a very big bang this year on August 12/13.

Exploding with tens of thousands of rockets and spectacular mortars, the very best of the country's firework display teams take on one another for the grand title in what is one of the biggest annual displays put on by professional firework companies in the UK.

Spectacular performances start each night just as darkness falls on the Hoe. Entertainment – other than that provided by the four tonnes of fireworks – includes a traditional fairground.

Despite varying weather conditions over the years – and even a WW2 bomb being found on the site – the event has successfully taken place every year since it started in 1997, although in 2012 the judges decided not to name a winner after gale force winds limited the scope of some of the displays on the second night.

THE British Virgin Islands (BVI) Tourist Board has announce a new VIP air service. It flies Antigua and Beef Island, and connects with the arrival/departure of scheduled British Airways and Virgin Atlantic flights between London, Gatwick and Antigua. 

The twice a week flights, on Saturdays and Sundays, operated by VI Airlink, include a personalized meet-and-greet concierge service.

Commenting on the service, Sharon Flax-Mars, the BVI’s director of tourism says: ‘Our passenger numbers from the UK have been growing. We listened to our industry partners and added the extra airlift they need.’

The timing of the new flights will allow visitors departing from the BVI to have more time in their destination on the day of departure, while incoming guests will arrive earlier.
