"Safety Tips", alert app for foreign tourists to Japan

FOLLOWING the two earthquakes in Kumamoto, Japan in April of this year an app is available for foreign tourists in #Japan to download from Google Play or itunes.

The smartphone app gives alerts for Earthquake Early Warning, Tsunami Warning, and other Weather Warnings within Japan in English, Japanese, Hangul, Traditional Chinese and Simplified Chinese.

The app provides various functions useful for both foreign tourists and residents in Japan, such as Evacuation flowchart showing actions to be taken in the light of surrounding circumstances, Communication Card for obtaining information from people nearby, and Website Links that contain helpful information in the event of a disaster.

ABTA advice for Euro 2016 fans

THE ASSOCIATION OF BRITISH TRAVEL AGENTS (ABTA) is encouraging the hundreds of thousands of English, Welsh, and Northern Irish fans travelling to France to make the most of their time there, as they prepare to head over or under the tunnel for #Euro2016 which kicks off in Paris on Friday 10 June.

ABTA is also urging fans looking for last-minute match tickets to buy from official sources only, and to ensure they have accommodation booked in advance.

Victoria Bacon, ABTA director of Brand and Business Development, said: ‘Euro2016 will offer an ideal opportunity for football fans from around the UK to experience the amazing food and culture on offer in some of France’s most interesting and beautiful cities.

‘As excitement builds in the lead up to kick off next week, many fans who haven’t booked yet might be tempted to head off, but with accommodation at a premium and people jostling for hotel rooms, they must ensure they have somewhere to stay before they leave Britain.’

ABTA advises fans travelling to France to read the Foreign and Commonwealth Office advice at https://www.gov.uk/government/news/be-on-the-ball-for-euro-2016

Xmas rail travel warning for Gatwick passengers

RAIL services run by Southern, Thameslink, and Gatwick Express between London and Gatwick Airport will be disrupted by ‘major improvement’ works from 10pm on December 24 to 04am on January 4, the airport has warned.

During this period there will be no trains between South Croydon and Redhill. The Gatwick Express will be suspended, but travel by train from London Victoria to Gatwick will be possible via Horsham, but this will take approximately 90 minutes, rather than the usual 30. Alternatively, passengers can travel by train to East Grinstead where replacement bus services will be operating. The journey will take approximately 90 minutes via East Grinstead.

Go Holiday editor David Kernek comments: No surprise there, then; if it’s a holiday period with thousands of people going to or coming from an airport, that’s exactly the right time to schedule ‘major improvement’ works.
