Stay in a Cambridge college

IT'S a little known fact that members of the public can book student accommodation out of term times (from as little as £34 per person per night) at some of the famous #Cambridge University colleges – including King's, Christ's, Magdalene, St John's, Clare, Trinity Hall, and Corpus Christi.

Visitors can check their bags into the porter's lodge before enjoying a drink in the college bar, a meal in the dining room and a walk in the college gardens.

Follow in the footsteps of some of King's college alumni, including poet John Keats, novelists Thomas Hardy, W. Somerset Maugham, and Virginia Wolf, and Britain's first prime minister, Robert Walpole.

Founded in 1441 by Henry VI, it took some 100 years to complete the buildings in the heart of Cambridge. Single and double ensuite accommodation is offered to guests at the recently-refurbished Benet Street site.

Clare College’s celebrated alumni include naturalist Sir David Attenborough, and writer and broadcaster Matthew Parris. Founded in 1326, it is Cambridge's second oldest college, with 17th century architecture and riverside gardens. Single and twin room student accommodation, with either ensuite or shared bathrooms, is available at the college's Memorial Court and Chesterton Lane sites.

Kent tops trending UK & Ireland destinations list

TRAVEL search site momondo.com has done an analysis of its search data in order to make its UK domestic travel predictions for 2016. The data showed that domestic destinations accounted for 10% of all searches made on the site in 2015.

Kent topped the list of the seven trending destinations they expect to see growing in popularity this year. Waterford in Ireland and Dundee in Scotland came second and third respectively. Searches for Cambridge were up by 288%, Bournemouth by 200%, Guernsey by 149%, and Kerry by 89%.

Lasse Skole Hansen at momondo.co.uk, said: ‘Our findings suggest that cultural breaks may be on the up for Brits. This is due to a rise in interest for specific domestic destinations known for historical tourism.

‘For example, in Kent, Canterbury was once itself a pilgrimage site in the Middle Ages. Waterford is Ireland’s oldest city, and Dundee in Scotland is home to the 15th century Broughty Castle. Cambridge is home to arguably the world’s best university.

‘It seems many Brits do still like a view, though, as scenic destinations County Kerry and Guernsey, which both boast striking coastal terrain, are both also trending destinations.’

Nordic connections for Cambridge flights

SCANDINAVIA’S SUN-AIR is planning to expand its range of Nordic destinations from Cambridge, England, with connecting services to #Stockholm and #Helsinki.

The move comes after the successful introduction of the Gothenburg service in March this year. Passengers from Cambridge travelling to the two Scandinavian capitals – Stockholm and Helsinki – will be able to use the connections at Gothenburg for onward flights.

Says David Surley, head of business and route development at Cambridge Airport: ‘SUN-AIR has not only brought us closer to Scandinavia with its daily midweek Gothenburg flights, it is now connecting Cambridge and our region to two of Europe’s most important capital cities.

‘Flight links to Stockholm’s downtown airport take you right to the heart of the Swedish capital, avoiding lengthy road journeys, while the link to Helsinki is particularly significant – the only connection from the East England region, shaving hours off the alternative journey using Gatwick or Heathrow.’

Daily flights are operated from Cambridge, Monday-Thursday at 7am, Return flights depart Helsinki and Stockholm at approximately 4pm.

Flights and hotel bookings for both Stockholm and Helsinki can be made online at www.ba.com.
