Staycity plans apartment expansion in Europe

FRANCE, Germany, the Nordic countries, Spain, Italy, and the UK are markets targeted for expansion by aparthotel operator #Staycity, which plans to have more than 2,000 apartments by the end of next year.

The company’s chief executive, Tom Walsh, said that many of the key European cities offered a healthy mix of business and leisure guests. This, coupled with a current undersupply of serviced apartments, has prompted the company to seek properties across Europe.

Dublin-based Staycity currently operates 1,000 apartments in eight European cities including Edinburgh, London, Manchester, Paris, and Amsterdam.

Additional Staycity apartments will open this year in Lyon and Birmingham, with further openings next year in Marseille, London, and York.

MARLIN APARTMENTS has raised almost £10,000 for its 2014 charity of the year, the British Heart Foundation.

Furniture donations were made following the refurbishment of its apartments last year at Marlin’s flagship property in Empire Square, London, where nearly-new sofas were replaced. The resulting funds from the sales of the sofas reached a total of almost £10,000.

This year, Marlin is supporting Guy’s Hospital, raising awareness of its new state-of-the-art cancer centre, and fundraising for it. The centre will be one of the largest in Europe.

Europe leads US in holiday rentals market

‘The percentage of travellers who have rented a home, apartment, villa, or cottage rose significantly in 2014 in the UK and France … Europe presents a substantially larger opportunity’

THE private holiday accommodation market in Europe is significantly larger than in the US. According to a new report by travel industry research authority Phocuswright, more than twice as many British, French, and German holidaymakers – as a percentage of the respective populations – have stayed in private accommodation over the past year.

France, Germany, and the UK alone are home to some 33 million rental holidaymakers versus just 22 million in the US.

Europe's rental traveller population is growing, reports Phocuswright's Share This! Europe: Private Accommodation and the New Rental Traveler. The percentage of travellers who have rented a home, apartment, villa, or cottage rose significantly in 2014 in the UK and France, reflecting both an improving overall economic environment and demand for travel, as well as rising awareness and use of private accommodations. Only in Germany was there a slight downturn, likely reflecting the slowdown of the broader economy there.

‘Although the US is home to two of the largest innovators in private accommodation – Airbnb and HomeAway – Europe presents a substantially larger opportunity,’ says Phocuswright's vice president, research, Douglas Quinby. ‘The percentage of European travellers who rent is more than twice that of the US.’-

Phocuswright's report provides insight into European rental travellers – to assess who they are, how they travel, what they want, and how they shop and book. This study examines the potential overlap between the rental and hotel markets, including the extent to which renters consider and stay in hotels, as well as whether non-renters consider private accommodation. The analysis also looks at emerging trends among rental travellers in terms of demographics, travel behaviour and use of consumer technology.

Topics covered by the report include:
  • The size of the private accommodation market
  • Analysis of traveller attitudes and intentions, frequency of leisure trips, and travel party composition by traveller type
  • Booking methods by renter type, country, and age
  • Insight into the drivers for choosing a rental over a hotel by renter type and country

Serviced apartment sector sees strong growth

TWO of the UK’s leading serviced apartment brands have reported strong figures for 2014.

The Association of Serviced Apartment Providers (ASAP) has seen a 20% increase in membership to 90 members in 2014, with occupancies reaching 84.5% in London, up 2.1% year-on-year. Occupancy outside of London reached 81.9%, up by 2.6%. The association is looking to expand its leisure business off the back of a successful corporate market.

“ASAP’s quality assessment programme has strong appeal to families visiting the UK, who, like business travellers, want to know that units have been properly assessed and they know what they’re getting for their money,” said the association’s managing director James Foice.

Further promotion of the market is expected this year, with provider Serviced Apartment Company also seeing an increase in business. Its online reservations are up by 41%.

THE Spring Savings promotion by Marlin Apartments gives holidaymakers 20% discounts on London breaks throughout this month (March) and April.

The apartments are in Aldgate, Limehouse, and Canary Wharf.

‘With the average room rate for London hotels rising by almost 10% last year, it is essential that visitors have more encouragement from accommodation providers to come to London on a city break,’ says Susan Cully, the company’s MD.

‘We understand that families have to work with tighter budgets each year, and Marlin’s [

Accolade for Marlin Apartments, as hotel rates in UK capitals soar

MARLIN APARTMENTS – owner of more than 700 premium apartments in London – has won an industry award. It has been named Industry Leader by the Association of Serviced Apartment Providers.

The company, founded in 2003, says its apartments for leisure and business visitors offer almost three times the space of the equivalent standard London hotel room, plus a fully-equipped kitchen and complimentary high-speed Wi-Fi.

Meanwhile, the latest research has found that hotel rates in London remain the highest in Europe.

Room rates have risen by 17 percent on those recorded in Q3 2013. They have reached £134 a night, ahead of Zurich and Copenhagen. Rates in Edinburgh and Cardiff have risen by 18 percent.

Growth in serviced apartments sector

THE first quarter of 2014 has seen significant growth in the serviced apartment sector, according to STR Global and the Association of Serviced Apartment Providers.

London-based apartments have pushed occupancy to 77.8% over the quarter. Refresh Accommodation said many tourists visiting London preferred to stay in studio apartment.

The top three locations are
  • Chelsea and South Kensington (25%),
  • City and East London (18.06%) and
  • Central and West End (17.13%).

The rise in popularity could largely come down to price. Hotel prices are set to increase by two percent after a flat growth rate in 2013.
