Celebrate Independence Day at the Empire State Building

THIS Independence Day, celebrate the holiday with friends and family at the Empire State Building's "Ultimate 4th of July" celebration. Limited tickets are still available for this exclusive event which offers breathtaking views of the Macy's 4th of July Fireworks Spectacular from the only open-air Observatory over one thousand feet above New York City – putting you at the center of all the action.

Closed to the general public, ticket holders are provided VIP private access to the 86th floor Observatory with prime viewing of the East River from 7:30 p.m. – 9:30 p.m. Guests are also invited to enjoy the 80th floor "Dare to Dream" exhibit where drinks flow from a premium open bar and gourmet food will be provided by STATE Grill and Bar, the signature restaurant of the Empire State Building. Following the fireworks, attendees will be invited to visit the 102nd floor Observatory to cap off their breathtaking evening.

And they have the vote!

AS our cousins across the Atlantic celebrate their #IndependenceDay, a survey of young Brits by holiday company Hayes & Jarvis reveals jaw-dropping ignorance of the history of the UK’s closest ally.

The survey found that:

• Almost a 25 percent of those surveyed thought the Declaration of Independence – the 1776 document that triggered the war between the East Coast colonies and England – was written by President Jack Kennedy (1917-1963).
• Many youngsters confused Martin Luther King's I Have A Dream speech with the TV premiere of The Flintstones.
• A quarter of people in Cambridge, England, believed Kim Kardashian’s father was either a) the director of My Fair Lady and West Side Story, or b) a former US president. 
• More than 60 percent of those surveyed in Southampton, Hampshire, thought that Washington DC was the capital of Washington State.

One of the complaints heard after Britain’s referendum on the country’s membership of the doomed European Union project was that the result was determined by older folks who, it was said, had far less to lose than young people. Many of these young people, however, were students who, though apparently so profoundly concerned about their life chances, just couldn’t find the time, or summon the interest, to get their names on the electoral rolls. Perhaps they were too busy getting their Glastonbury tickets?

If the results of this survey are an anywhere near accurate reflection of what kids know or don’t know about history, then perhaps it’s just as well that more of them didn’t vote.

Thomas Jefferson – the third #US president, not to be confused with the Jefferson Airplane’s lead singer – argued that an ignorant citizenry was bound to succumb to tyranny.

Independence Day . . . Barbados

#Barbados celebrates her 49th Independence Day today November 30th which is a national holiday. 

Celebrations include sports competitions, fairs, community events and religious services. A grand parade is held, usually at the Garrison Savannah, site of the original Independence ceremony in 1966. 

Some of the events lined up for this years celebrations include:-

Marathon weekend: December 4-6
Events include a Friday Fun Run Mile through St Lawrence Gap; a Saturday 5K Fun Run & Walk and a 10K Race.  On the Sunday there will be both a marathon and a half-marathon.

Classical/Pops festival: December 10-12
The Classical Pops Festival is an annual outdoor event inspired by similar events in Massachusetts and the BBC Proms.

Mount Gay Rum race: January 16-24
The yacht race around the island dates back to the 19th Century and is based upon bragging rights for the fastest trading schooner.
