Up in the air . . .

NORWEGIAN first launched transatlantic flights from Gatwick Airport to three U.S destinations in July 2014, with the aviation industry divided on whether the ‘low-cost long-haul’ venture would succeed.

Two years later, and Norwegian’s long-haul operation is already profitable and now plays a key role in the airline’s continued passenger growth. Norwegian is still the only airline offering UK passengers direct low-cost transatlantic travel - the airline’s long-haul network from the UK has now grown to 8 US destinations with over 650,000 UK passengers and more than 800,000 flights on sale this year.

Growing Interest from US in High-End Travel to Vietnam

DESTINATION Asia #Vietnam recently hosted a series of high end retail travel agent trips from the US following growing interest in this market for luxurious encounters with an infusion of local adventure.

For many agents it was their first visit to Vietnam and Destination Asia wanted to expose the ‘real’ essence of the country. Using unrivalled local knowledge, we were able to connect the agents with a broad range of local experiences that the everyday traveler would never discover on their own.

The groups visited a range of destinations including, Ho Chi Minh City, Hoi An in central Vietnam and the capital Hanoi. The UNESCO World Heritage area of Halong Bay was also on most itineraries. It was a great opportunity for Destination Asia Vietnam to showcase their new 2017 range of ‘local gems’ which include sampling a range of local cuisine (prepared by traditional vendors) from Pho and seafood pancake to locally brewed ‘craft’ beers and rice wine. Another hit was the Vespa food tour through districts of Ho Chi Minh where only locals frequent.

Located downtown in the “Most Beautiful Town Square in Texas,” the festival encompasses three days of concerts, parades, contests, art, food and family fun in the downtown area.

And they have the vote!

AS our cousins across the Atlantic celebrate their #IndependenceDay, a survey of young Brits by holiday company Hayes & Jarvis reveals jaw-dropping ignorance of the history of the UK’s closest ally.

The survey found that:

  • Almost a 25 percent of those surveyed thought the Declaration of Independence – the 1776 document that triggered the war between the East Coast colonies and England – was written by President Jack Kennedy (1917-1963).
  • Many youngsters confused Martin Luther King's I Have A Dream speech with the TV premiere of The Flintstones.
  • A quarter of people in Cambridge, England, believed Kim Kardashian’s father was either a) the director of My Fair Lady and West Side Story, or b) a former US president.
  • More than 60 percent of those surveyed in Southampton, Hampshire, thought that Washington DC was the capital of Washington State.

Go Holiday editor David Kernek comments: Beam me up! One of the complaints heard after Britain’s referendum on the country’s membership of the doomed European Union project was that the result was determined by older folks who, it was said, had far less to lose than young people. Many of these young people, however, were students who, though apparently so profoundly concerned about their life chances, just couldn’t find the time, or summon the interest, to get their names on the electoral rolls. Perhaps they were too busy getting their Glastonbury tickets?

If the results of this survey are an anywhere near accurate reflection of what kids know or don’t know about history, then perhaps it’s just as well that more of them didn’t vote.

Thomas Jefferson – the third #US president, not to be confused with the Jefferson Airplane’s lead singer – argued that an ignorant citizenry was bound to succumb to tyranny.

Let the renter beware!

THE arrival of spring kicks summer vacation planning into high gear – for many that means finding a self-catering rental. But before booking that dream holiday home, travellers need to think twice about who they rent from as it makes a big difference when it comes to safety, service, and peace-of-mind, according to a survey in the US by Wyndham Vacation Rentals.

Almost 90 percent of do-it-yourself hosts secretly dread doing the things needed to guarantee a great holiday: dealing with guests, handling inspections, and cleaning the apartment or house. As a result, almost 70 percent of travellers who have tried both would prefer to rent from a professional management company as opposed to an owner during their next stay.

The private space and home-like amenities of vacation rentals have strong appeal; 89 percent of those who never tried a rental would consider doing so, but tales of vacation rentals gone bad when booking directly with a homeowner weigh on renters' minds. Sixty-two percent of all vacationers worry about not being able to get problems solved quickly and nearly half (46 percent) are not confident that they'll get what they anticipate when renting directly from an owner.

‘The survey underscores that travellers want to know their vacation is in the hands of someone they can trust,’ said Gail Mandel, CEO, Wyndham Vacation Rentals. ‘Being a homeowner doesn't necessarily make you qualified nor interested in running a bed and breakfast. The reality is most homeowners don't have the time to adequately meet guest expectations when it comes to safety, cleanliness, and assistance, and as a result they find the tasks daunting.’
