Aer Lingus launches Cork-Leeds Bradford flights

AER LINGUS REGIONAL has introduced thrice-weekly flights – operated by Stobart Air – from Leeds Bradford Airport to Cork in southern Ireland.

Tony Hallwood, Leeds Bradford Airport’s aviation development director, said: ‘We expect regional businesses to take advantage of this new route, and for those wanting a short break or holiday, Cork will not disappoint. With great food and lively entertainment, you can be sure of a warm welcome. We expect this route to become a firm favourite for Yorkshire visitors.’

The move comes as Aer Lingus Regional seeks to increase its passenger numbers at Cork by 60,000 in 2016 as part of an expansion under which it had announced two new routes at the airport and re-launches a third at Shannon.

Eastern Airways expands Leeds Bradford-Southampton service

LARGER aircraft and increased frequency are being introduced by Eastern Airways on the Leeds Bradford-Southampton route. The regional carrier has almost doubled seat capacity on the route following a hike in frequency in September from three to four return flights a day on weekdays.

A larger 50-seat Saab 2000 aircraft will operate services with an additional 3,700 seats a month available on the route from November 2.

The change of aircraft will also result in improvements to the schedule with departures from Yorkshire at 6.50am, 10am, 2.30pm, and 5.50pm, arriving in Southampton at 7.55am, 11.05am, 3.35pm, and 6.55pm. Flights from Southampton will depart at 8.25am, 11.30am, 4.15pm, and 7.25pm, landing in Leeds Bradford at 9.30am, 12.35pm, 5.20pm, and 8.30pm. Sunday services will leave Leeds Bradford at 4.50pm and Southampton at 6.45pm.

The airline’s commercial director, Kay Ryan, said: ‘By increasing capacity and recently upping the frequency of services due to the popularity of this important route, this demonstrates our firm commitment to both regions. We’re providing greater choice with more seats, a business-focused schedule with improved adjustments to timings to meet increased demand from business travellers commuting between these two vibrant business centres.’

BA offers free flights for kids during Rugby World Cup

CHILDREN under 12 will be able to fly #free from Heathrow to Newcastle and Leeds Bradford on British Airways (BA) flights during the #RugbyWorldCup.

The deal is available until November 1 to cover the duration of the event, making it easier for families to get to matches at St James’ Park, Elland Road, and Twickenham.

The #KidsFlyFree initiative follows the cut in Air Passenger Duty (APD) for under-12s from May and an extension of the tax cut to under-16s from May 2016

Dale Keller, chairman of the Fair Tax on Flying campaign, said: ‘This initiative is a great example of the benefit a cut in APD for children has brought to families across the country. The UK still has the highest air travel tax in the world – it is a barrier to boosting our tourism industry and a burden on hardworking families taking a well-deserved holiday.

‘The government should follow BA’s and Heathrow’s lead and put consumers first by further cutting this damaging tax.’

Nature doesn’t know it’s Xmas!

First the bad news …

THOUSANDS of travellers were delayed from getting away for Christmas due to a power failure at Stansted Airport in southern England on Monday.

A satellite building and the transit which takes passengers to the satellite for boarding were hit. Stansted reported that flights were operating, but with some delays.

A BRITISH AIRWAYS aircraft was forced to abort a landing at Leeds Bradford airport in Yorkshire due to strong winds on Monday.

The flight from Heathrow attempted to land, but had to divert to Manchester, where it landed safely. An easyJet flight from Geneva was also diverted.

Thousands of passengers had their flights in and out of the airport disrupted by the strong winds. Buses were used to take passengers to alternative airports on one of the busiest days of the year.

… and now the good …

A PLANNED two-day strike by ground handling staff at some airports in England in the run up to December 25 has been suspended.

Members of the Unite union working for Dnata at Heathrow, Gatwick, and Manchester had been due to walk out tomorrow. But they will now be balloted after a new pay offer was made.

… and then some more bad news ….

easyJet has been forced to cancel a number of flights on Boxing Day due to a strike by cabin crew in France. The industrial action covers December 25 – when no flights are scheduled – and December 26.

The airline said: ‘easyJet will do everything possible to minimize the impact of the strike on its passengers, which is why we have taken the decision to proactively cancel some flights on December 26 as a measure of precaution, to allow passengers to re-organize travel plans for the Christmas holidays.

‘Passengers can either receive a full refund or re-book their travel for an alternative date free of charge.’

Passengers planning to fly to and from France are being ‘strongly recommended’ to check the status of their flight on the airline’s website before setting out to the airport.
