Tour de France boosts Yorkshire tourism

FIGURES from VisitBritain have revealed that Yorkshire saw significant benefits from hosting the Tour de France last year.

Some 2.5 million people turned out to watch the Grand Départ of the world’s biggest bike race in July last year. 

VisitEngland reports that tourists had spent £380 million in Yorkshire in the 12 months to June, up by 45 percent on the previous year. 

The number of visitor nights spent in Yorkshire during the 12 months also increased by 18 percent to 5.3 million.

A new look at York

RUNNING until July 7, the York Curiouser project aims to explore the historic city through contemporary art. 

Artworks and trails will lead visitors into unexplored and hidden areas of York, as well as encouraging them to take a fresh look at better-known parts of the city.

The final weekend of York Curiouser will coincide with the start of the Tour de France Grand Départ in York, and is part of the 100-day Yorkshire Festival accompanying the tour.

The campaign is focused on re-establishing France as the UK's favourite holiday destination and regaining visitors from other European destinations such as Spain, Greece, and Italy.

See the Tour de France … live in England!

IF you’re holiday in England in July, and somewhere between Yorkshire and London, you might have the chance to see the Tour de France (TdF) live instead of on the telly.

It’s when – for only the second time in its history – one of the world’s greatest sporting events leaves its homeland across the Channel to put cyclists through their paces on England’s green and sometimes pleasant land.

The three-day, English leg of the race starts in Leeds on July 5 and heads for Harrogate via the Yorkshire Dales National Park. On day two, riders will go from York to Sheffield before travelling by car to Cambridge ready for the start of day three. From there it moves south into Essex, passing through Saffron Walden and Epping before racing into London’s East End and finishing at the Mall, with Buckingham Palace as the backdrop.

When they get to the Mall, the riders will have cycled 549 kilometres or, as we say on this side of the water, 341.13 miles.
