Half-term fun and games at the Eden Project

VISITORS can play their way through half-term at #Cornwall’s #EdenProject with a wide range of oversized, retro, and traditional games to entertain all ages from May 28 to June 5.

There will be a giant selection of hands-on games, and younger ones can explore the many play areas and hidden nooks and crannies that Eden's gardens have to offer.

In the Core building, gamers can step into the history of video games, from vintage to virtual reality. There will also be Subbuteo table tournaments and classic 8-bit games in a magnetic form on the fridges.

In the Rainforest Biome, Eden's narrators will be teaching visitors about a variety of global games, such as mancala, a strategy game played using a wooden board with hollows in and either seeds, small stones, or marbles.

Kate Francis, Eden Live Programme producer, said: ‘Game On will be a great chance for families to play and share their favourite games with one another. We are inviting visitors to come to explore the world of gaming at Eden from arcade classics to playground games. Gaming is about having fun, but it's also about being creative, collaborating, and solving problems. These are all skills that are very useful in day-to-day life. There are a lot of advantages in all of us playing games. It tests our brains, helps us think differently about our environment, and teaches us life lessons for the future, no matter how old you are!’

Woodland wonders

A TOURING exhibition of photographs taken by the general public is being launched by Plantlife and its partners in Devon this April, to celebrate the Atlantic woodlands of the South West of England.

Amateur photographers will be able to see their photographs on display for the first time at the Lynmouth Pavilion on the North Devon Coast.

Close to the Atlantic, the woodlands are important plants areas – internationally recognized hotspots for wild plants – and home to some of the smallest yet most important wild plants in the UK. Wild plant conservation charity and competition co-ordinator Plantlife organized the photo competition to encourage the public to see the special woodlands and the lower plants they support in a new light and be inspired to visit one.

Exhibition co-ordinator and plantlife project manager, Rachel Jones, says: ‘We hope that this exhibition will inspire people to not only discover the beauty and atmosphere of these important Atlantic woodlands on their doorstep and the lichens, mosses and ferns that grow there, but also to go out to see what they can capture through a camera lens.’

The Wonders of the South West's Woodlands photographic exhibition can be seen at:

• April – Lynmouth Pavilion, Exmoor National Park, Lynmouth, Devon

• May – Braunton Countryside Centre, North Devon

• June – Fyne Court, The Quantock Hills, Somerset

• September to February 2016 - National Park Visitor Centre, Princetown,
Dartmoor National Park

Westwood on show

THE impact of 18th century art and design on the work of distinguished British fashion designer Vivienne Westwood will be highlighted in an exhibition at Danson House, Bexleyheath, Kent, this spring.

Vivienne Westwood: Cut from the Past brings together for the first time a number of her ground-breaking designs, and explores the collections that proved to be her turning point both critically and commercially.

The exhibition –
www.dansonhouse.org.uk - which runs from April 1 to October 31 – highlights Westwood’s seminal work of the 1990's, which was influenced by 18th century artists.
