England’s summer treasures

THE Treasure Houses of England [www.treasurehouses.co.uk] offer gardens, parkland, exhibitions, and a schedule of events for the summer. 

Here are some of the highlights for days out:

• There are plenty of fun family activities at Blenheim Palace (Oxfordshire). Enjoy skills workshops, a petting zoo, 'Animal Encounters' talks, Punch and Judy Shows, face-painting, making re-cycled sculptures on the lawn, as well as discovering the Marlborough Maze and beautiful Butterfly House in the Pleasure Gardens. 

• Take a daily guided tour with a difference at Burghley (Lincolnshire), where every morning until September 3 (excluding Fridays and Sundays) you can find out about the horrible history associated with the house. 

• There are more than 30 rooms to explore at Chatsworth (Derbyshire), from the magnificent Painted Hall, regal State Rooms, restored Sketch Galleries and beautiful Sculpture Gallery. In the guest bedrooms, meet an Edwardian lady's maid who will be revealing the secrets of her mistress's suitcase of clothes, or dress up in one of the period costumes. 

• A nine-day medieval festival (August 23-31) comes to Leeds Castle (Kent), in association with The Royal Armouries. 

• The De Havilland Tiger Moth Rally (August 16-17) takes place at Woburn Abbey (Bedfordshire). It showcases vintage cars and planes.

Holiday menus key for the young

A SURVEY has shown that more than 40 per cent of travellers aged 18-34 have chosen a holiday destination specifically because they wanted to try a certain type of food – a figure in contrast with the over-65s, of whom only 11 per cent let their stomachs do the decision-making.

The survey by International Currency Exchange looked at how attitudes to foreign abroad can differ according to generation. The report found that of the youngest group, aged 18-34, more than a quarter said food was the only thing they considered when booking a holiday abroad, while a further 38 percent hold it as a key consideration.

Europcar launches bike-fitted vehicles

EUROPCAR AUSTRALIA has made travelling with bikes simpler by becoming the country’s first car rental company to offer vehicles fitted with bike carriers. 

The new category of ‘bike-ready’ Mitsubishi Outlanders fitted with Thule ProRide bike carriers are available from five airport locations – Sydney, Melbourne, Brisbane, Coolangatta and Maroochydore.

Safe glamping.....

AS the heatwave continues ( well, at the time of writing!) Pitchup.com has published safety tips for holidaymakers thinking about the attractions (if attractions there be) of a break under canvas.

• Pick a campsite with shade, such as a forest location. US research shows forests can be up to five degrees Celsius cooler due to the shade and evaporation.

• If buying a new tent, pick one with a separate groundsheet. This allows air to circulate inside the tent, even when closed, which has a cooling effect.

• Take extra freezer blocks: rotate them to keep food and drinks cool. Choose a site with ice pack freezing available.

• Pack a fan. A battery-powered fan will provide a great cooling effect, especially if a bowl of ice is placed in front of it – instant air conditioning!

• If pitched in direct sunlight, provide shade or reflectors that will keep the sun’s rays off and the tent cooler.

• Be careful with innocent objects that could start a fire if left in direct sunlight. Bottles of water can concentrate the sun’s rays and ignite groundsheets.

Camping air conditioning units are available, but these can prove expensive and require an electric hook-up, so are not ideal for all campers on non-electric pitches.’

Best resort for sport

SARASOTA COUNTY, Florida, USA has been voted Sports Events magazine’s Sports-Friendliest Vacation Destination. 

The mixture of beaches, shopping and dining combined with excellent sporting event venues and service were factors in the win.

Sarasota County is on the west coast of Florida, 45 minutes from Tampa and 90 minutes from Orlando.

Etihad targets Scotland

ETIHAD AIRWAYS will next year launch its first service from Scotland with the start of a non-stop daily flight from Edinburgh to its home base of Abu Dhabi.

The new route will start in June, 2015.

It will enable passengers from Scotland to connect conveniently to Etihad Airways’ destinations across the Gulf region, Asia, Australia, and Africa.
