London beats Paris in top cities league, but Asia takes the prizes

LONDON has beaten its rival across the Channel in a ranking of the planet’s top 100 cities for tourism.

The statistics, compiled by Euromonitor International, put the English capital in fourth place, while Paris comes in at fifth.

The list aims to identify the world’s major cities by using international tourist arrival numbers. London, with 16.8 million international arrivals in 2013 (the year for which the latest numbers are available), is just ahead of Paris, with 15.2 million. London is also the top ranked city outside Asia.

But the overall figures make worrying reading for Europe and North America. London, Paris, and New York are the only cities in either continent to make the top ten: Rome and Barcelona are 14th and 25th respectively.

The three top locations are:

Hong Kong (25.6million visitors) - pictured left,

Singapore (22.5million), and

Bangkok (17.5million).

The rest of the top ten are Macau (sixth), the Chinese city of Shenzen (eighth), and Kuala Lumpur (ninth).
