Airbnb moves into the workplace

THE meetings market (or MICE as it is called) is the next most lucrative sector for hotels and is the slowest in tech adoption. So it’s unsurprising that disruptive travel companies are shaking up the market. For independent hotels, this means both opportunity and increased competition.

Airbnb finally announced a few days ago that Airbnb for Work is expanding into services and experiences for a workplace audience to “help foster a sense of belonging—even at work.” We say finally because for those who have been monitoring Airbnb’s growth, it’s been clear that the company has been looking to expand into the workplace. Back in April 2018, Airbnb for Events was launched, aimed specifically for planners. The tool encourages attendees to book Airbnb accommodations through an interactive map of Airbnb listings embedded directly on the event site.

Airbnb reports this month that 700,000 companies have had employees sign up and book with the company’s business platform. Of all these companies, more than 300,000—up from 275,000 a few weeks ago—are directly engaged with Airbnb to help manage their travel.

Use Airbnb to fund your climb up the property ladder

NEW startup, Uppie, is aiming to help first-time buyers boost their deposit savings with up to £15,000 worth of Airbnb bookings.  The concept, which is the brainchild of two young entrepreneurs, George Rawlings (aged 25) and Jonathan Harris (aged 28), uses the income-generating power of Airbnb to help solve the first time buyer deposit problem.

Effectively, Uppie is buying home-rental days in bulk from new Airbnb hosts, paying the first-time buyer this income upfront, and then managing the bookings under a service agreement.

While buyers need to be prepared to facilitate a number of Airbnb stays in their property for an agreed period of time, Uppie can provide a calendar of dates of key events when owners can maximise their booking income.

The new business model is perfect for towns like Cheltenham, with its many festivals and race meets commanding a surge in demand for short-term rental accommodation, which can in turn generate high prices on Airbnb.

Sweden lists entire country on Airbnb

VISIT Sweden, Sweden’s official tourism board, has partnered with Airbnb to turn the entire country into an Airbnb listing. And the best part is - you don’t have to officially book accommodation, because in #Sweden all publicly owned land is entirely free and accessible to everyone!

Every lake is your infinity pool, every mountaintop your granite terrace, every meadow becomes a garden and every forest a pantry filled with mushrooms and berries. Feel free to take a morning jog or bike ride across open fields or trek through challenging mountain terrain. Should you want an upgrade, you do not need to ask anyone, just find the best location that suits you and your mood.

Freedom to roam allows everyone and anyone to be free amidst Swedish nature with the right to access, walk, cycle or camp on any land. Only private gardens and lands under cultivation are an exception to the rule. The idea of free nature accessible to anyone is in the DNA of every Swede, but with great freedom comes great responsibility. The general rule for spending time in nature is “do not disturb, do not destroy” – just like in any other home.

Tax Agreement reached between US Virgin Islands and Airbnb

THE Government of the United States Virgin Islands and Airbnb have confirmed the first tax agreement in the #Caribbean, which will allow the platform to collect the Territory's 12.5 percent Hotel Room Occupancy Tax on behalf of hosts and remit the funds to the Virgin Islands Bureau of Internal Revenue (BIR). 

The agreement will also create a framework to help promote tourism to the U.S. Virgin Islands, highlighting the cultural and historical heritage of this world-class destination.

Airbnb has been investing in partnerships in the region to support a thriving community of homeowners who are renting their spaces and creating new flows of local economic benefits.
