Düsseldorf impresses as a weekend getaway destination

THE wealthy city of Düsseldorf is a great mix of business, fashion, arts and nightlife, a strong draw for both business and leisure travellers. Renowned for its party atmosphere, Düsseldorf’s cobblestoned Altstadt (Old Town) area boasts more than 300 bars and clubs, with each bar counter supposedly connecting to the one next door – earning it the nickname of ‘the longest bar in the world.’

In the air . . .

Vietjet announces its new international route connecting Hanoi with Singapore the new route will commence operation on April 27, 2017.

Etihad Airways today announced its Abu Dhabi – Düsseldorf route will be operated 14 times a week with the addition of a new daily service, effective 26 March 2017.

Jet Airways, India’s premier full service, international airline have introduced a new daily service between Mangaluru and New Delhi which took off on January 16. This new flight also links Mangaluru to key international business centres such as London, Amsterdam, Singapore and Hong Kong and popular tourist destinations such as Bangkok, Kathmandu and Dhaka through New Delhi.

Norwegian expands routes to Germany

NORWEGIAN the world’s sixth largest low-cost airline, continues to expand its route network in Germany with five new route launches from Düsseldorf Airport and three new route launches from Hannover Airport.

Nearly 170 000 seats are available for the summer season to and from Düsseldorf Airport and over 50 000 seats available for the summer season to and from Hannover Airport – all of them to popular Spanish destinations.
Norwegian already operates routes in Germany from Hamburg, Munich, Berlin and Cologne.

Fun on the Rhine

MORE than 690 years ago, a shooting club in the Rhineland began celebrating its patron saint's day. Today, the event – #Düsseldorf's #FunFair – is one of the biggest outdoor summer parties in #Germany. The 10-day event (July15-24) attracts almost four million visitors.

It combines the German festival staples – beer tents with live music, sausage, sauerkraut, apple cake, and ginger bread with state-of-the-art rides, marching bands, parades, and fireworks.

It happens on the meadows by Rhine River across from the city's centre, and is reachable by foot, ferries, and public transport.

Flybe – new routes from Doncaster Sheffield Airport

#YORKSHIRE’S Doncaster Sheffield Airport has announced the launch of new Flybe flights to Paris Charles de Gaulle, along with a business route to Dusseldorf.

Part of a new eight-route deal between Flybe and the airport, the launch of the new routes will see the UK-based budget airline deliver the largest number of departures from the Yorkshire airport, offering some 42 extra flights per week. As part of the deal, almost 500,000 extra seats will be available to Paris, Amsterdam, Berlin, Jersey, Newquay, Malaga, Alicante, and Faro.

The Embraer 195 jet aircraft that took off from Doncaster Sheffield Airport to Paris on March 24, inscribed with ‘Welcome to Yorkshire’ livery, will be used to promote the Yorkshire region to potential tourists across Europe and the UK.

Up in the air …

BMI REGIONAL expands UK network with double daily flights from Southampton to Munich – From April 15, the capital of Bavaria will be served 12 times weekly by bmi regional from Southampton Airport. The airline expects this new route to appeal to both leisure and business travellers.

EUROWINGS continues to expand its services from its largest location in Düsseldorf, launching a service to East Midlands Airport in the UK in March. The regional airport offers fast access to the areas around Derby, Nottingham and Leicester. The German airline will operate the route every day except Saturdays. Tickets for the Düsseldorf-East Midlands route can be booked via the internet at www.eurowings.com, with prices starting from €29.99 (£23.22) including all taxes, fees and charges.

INDEPENDENT tour operator Sardatur Holidays will launch weekly flights from Manchester to Sardinia in July. The flights to Cagliari and Olbia will operate during the summer from July 9 to September 17.

Eurowings to start Edinburgh-Dusseldorf flights

EDINBURGH AIRPORT has confirmed that #Eurowings, part of the Lufthansa Group, is to launch thrice-weekly direct flights between Scotland’s capital and Dusseldorf Airport in March next year. 

Mike Cantlay, chairman of VisitScotland, says: ‘#Germany already makes up our single biggest European market and is our second largest international market. 

Last year, Scotland welcomed 343,000 trips by our German friends – almost a fifth more than in 2013. Air services play an important part in growing the visitor economy and we are particularly delighted to see such a strong operator as Eurowings increasing its position in Scotland.’

Fun on the Rhine

THIS year’s ten-day Düsseldorf' Fair starts on July 17.

Dating back to the 15th century – when a local shooting club began celebrating its patron saint's day – the annual fair on the Rhine now attracts some four million visitors, rivalling the better known Oktoberfest in Bavaria.

The fair combines traditional and modern entertainment, with beer tents, and sausages, and state-of-the-art rides.

It kicks off with 3,000 uniformed marksmen on horseback and foot, and marching bands, in a parade through Düsseldorf's streets.

New flights to Paris and Dusseldorf

BMI REGIONAL has announced the launch of flights to Paris Charles De Gaulle and Dusseldorf from Bristol Airport. The Paris service will operate six days a week, with two flights a day Monday to Friday, and one flight on Sunday. The Dusseldorf flight will run six times a week, Sunday to Friday

FLYBE has launched its new direct route from Cardiff to Dusseldorf. Beginning initially as a Saturday service, the flight frequency will increase to four services a week starting August 31, with fares available from £44.99 each way.

New flights from Bristol

NEW routes from Bristol to Paris, Düsseldorf, and Nantes are being introduced by BMI Regional. The additional services bring the number of routes flown by the airline from Bristol to eight, alongside Aberdeen, Hamburg, Munich, Frankfurt, and Milan.

Paris and Düsseldorf flights start on April 27, with the Nantes summer-only service running between July 4 and September 12.

Fares to the French capital start at £69 one way, with Düsseldorf and Nantes at £79.

Paris flights will run six days a week with two flights a day Monday to Friday, and one flight on Sunday. Bristol-Düsseldorf will operate six times a week, Sunday to Friday, with Nantes served Tuesdays and Saturdays.

New flights to Dusseldorf

GERMANWINGS has started new Stansted-Dusseldorf flights. 

It is operating the new route as twice-daily: morning and evening flights on weekdays; one flight on Saturdays and Sundays.
