Aruba gets award for fossil fuel-free ambition

Aruba's sustainable energy initiatives have won international recognition. The Caribbean island took top spot in the Destination Leadership category of the National Geographic World Legacy Awards.

Recognizing Aruba's effort to be the world's first country free of fossil fuels, the award was presented during Berlin’s international travel fair.

The awards showcase the travel companies and organizations leading the way in sustainable tourism.

Aruba's Minister of Integration, Infrastructure and Environment, Oslin Sevinger, said: ‘In recent years we have worked closely with the world’s most innovative thinkers on this issue, and we are proud that our efforts and best practices are rubbing off on other Caribbean islands. This is just the beginning.'

Aruba remains on track to be free of fossil fuels by 2020.

Tourism organizations offered chance to bid for government funding

EDUCATION, tourism, and trade and investment organizations in England, Scotland, Wales, and Northern Ireland are being offered the chance to bid for up to £2 million in government funding.

Cultural and sporting organizations and private sector companies can also be included in bids as part of a new GREAT UK Challenge Fund, which will administered by VisitEngland.

Decisions on funding will be made by a board comprising the Foreign & Commonwealth Office, Department for Culture, Media and Sport, British Council, UK Trade & Investment, VisitBritain, and the devolved administrations.

The fund has been established to provide seed-funding for projects that enable city, metropolitan, regional, and national organizations and sector associations operating in partnership to exploit market opportunities overseas. The focus is to capitalize on opportunities in overseas markets, with up to £2 million being made available to support the fund in 2015/16.

When in South Oxfordshire …

Recognized as one of the most beautiful stretches of the Thames, the Goring Gap is the setting for classic books The Wind in the Willows, Watership Down and Three Men in a Boat. Views of Goring Lock, the weirs, and the rural landscape, especially as seen from the bridge, are some of the most photographed and painted scenes in England.

Yewhenge is an accurate, third-size replica of Stonehenge growing at
Waterperry Gardens, near Thame. The yew trees were planted early in the new millennium to the exact same geographical co-ordinates as the historic ancient monument. Open all year.

The Victorian Maharajah's Well is at Stoke Row, five miles west of Henley on Thames. Built in 1864, it is the depth of two Nelson's columns and topped by a golden elephant. It was a gift from the Indian Maharajah of Benares. Open all year.

Part of a 6.5 acre nature reserve, Ewelme Watercress Beds extend the entire length of the village. Although watercress is no longer grown commercially, the beds are a reminder of times where it thrived and supplied London's Covent Garden.

The Ornate 15th century Rycroft Chapel near Thame has exquisitely carved and painted woodwork, a musicians' gallery dating from 1610, and Baroque reredos dated 1682. The young Princess Elizabeth was detained here during the reign of her sister Mary, and she returned many times once she became queen. Open at weekends only.

King Alfred's Saxon fortifications still surround the town of Wallingford. They are the largest and best-surviving example of their kind in England.
