WEST COUNTRY cottage specialist Helpful Holidays' 2016 brochure features almost 600 places to stay, with an increase in properties in Cornwall and North Devon.

The agency’s holiday homes – in Cornwall, Devon, Dorset, and Somerset – range from romantic retreats for two up to large country houses for a maximum of 38 guests, with weekly rates from £179 to £7,175.

Many are within strolling distance of a beach or local pub, and more than half welcome pets. More than 70 have an indoor or outdoor swimming pool, while others have private moorings or fishing rights, and some are on working farms.

Take a walk in the West

THIS year’s North Devon and Exmoor Walking Festival (May 2-9) offers a range of guided walks, including a visit to Lundy Island.

There will be walks majoring on birdsong, a chance to see red deer with National Park Rangers, and a linear walk using the West Somerset Railway.

Helpful Holidays No. 2 for self-catering

WEST COUNTRY cottage specialist Helpful Holidays has been placed in the top two for a prestigious national award for the fourth year in succession.

The Devon-based agency came second in the Best Medium Cottage/Self-Catering Booking (UK properties) at the 2014 British Travel Awards, having achieved first place last year.

Helpful Holidays general manager Moray Bowater, said: ‘We’re proud and honoured to have been continuously highly placed and immensely grateful to all those who took the trouble to vote for us. The agency was also awarded joint first place in the 2014 Which? Travel members’ survey of UK self-catering accommodation, achieving Recommended Provider status for three years in succession with a high customer score of 95%.
