Qui veniunt .... tunc vident ..... consumunt!

They come ... they see ... they spend!

TOURISTS spending in the UK is expected to reach £22.2 billion, according to a forecast by VisitBritain. The total for 2014 was £21.3 billion.

Pictured, left, is a typical throng queueing to join one of the many open top sightseeing buses that ply the more touristy areas of central London. And this is a common sight all over Britain with its magnificent mix of culture, arts, history and modern economy.

Baker Street - where this picture was taken - is a particular tourist attraction area being close to Madame Tussauds, the Planetarium and because of the Sherlock Holmes connection.

The number of overseas visitors will rise to 35.1 million, up by 2.5 percent on the 2014 number, says VisitBritain.

Scotland … in a word

WELCOMING’, ‘beautiful’, ‘home’ or ‘fandabbydozy’ – what word best describes Scotland? That’s the question being posed in a campaign by leading figures in the country’s tourism industry.

The aim is to create a giant word cloud that organizers hope will act as a fun reminder that tourism in Scotland is everyone’s business.

Scots and visitors are being invited to tweet the word they believe captures and encapsulates what Scotland means to them.

The chosen word should be followed by #onewordScotland.

The #onewordscotland word cloud will be supported by VisitScotland, the Scottish Tourism Alliance, Scotland Food and Drink, and the Scottish Licensed Trade Association.

Orlando from A to Z

THE 2015 edition of The Brit Guide To Orlando by Florida-based writers Simon and Susan Veness is available now via Amazon UK.

‘We firmly believe this is the most exciting destination on earth, but it does make some serious demands on your time/wallet/patience, hence the need to your homework in advance and take us with you at all times,’ says Simon, the English half of the Anglo-American writing partnership. ‘We hate the idea of people spending their hard-earned cash on a trip to Orlando and not getting full value for it, so much of what we do is very much the tourist's eye view of things, and not the glossy brochure version.’

In its 20th year, the guide is updated and enlarged annually.

National Trust unveils unique arts & crafts property

A RARE surviving example of a traditional arts and crafts house, with many pieces of original furniture, will give visitors the chance to explore a much-loved family home and garden.

In the Charnwood Forest, Leicestershire, Stoneywell was built in 1899 by Ernest Gimson, a leading light of the Arts and Crafts movement. It was built as a holiday home for his elder brother, and remained in the Gimson family until 2012, when it was acquired by the National Trust.

The house, built with local stone, is surrounded by gardens and woodland.

Stoneywell opens to the public on February 2 for seven days a week until November 30, when it closes for two months for conservation work.

Due to its small size, visits must be booked in advance, which can be done either online at www.nationaltrust.org.uk/stoneywell or by calling 01530 248048.
