Mary Rose Museum to re-open after multi-million facelift

VISITORS to Portsmouth Historic Dockyard will get a new perspective on the Mary Rose, Henry VIII’s 16th century warship, thanks to a £5.4 million refurbishment.

The dockyard’s Mary Rose Museum closed in November last year for the project, and will re-opens this month (July).

Visitors had previously been restricted to viewing the hull of the famous ship through small windows. Work to remove walls is now complete, and guests will be able to see the vessel from bow to stern through floor-to-ceiling glazing, with views of decades of restoration and conservation work.

Also, for the first time since the wreck emerged from the Solent in 1982, visitors will be able to enter the upper deck of the Mary Rose using an ‘air lock’. This enables them to be like passengers onboard the vessel, a move made possible because the hull is now stable after years of drying out and preservation.

Impressive views of the ship can now be seen from all nine galleries of the Mary Rose Museum, each containing artefacts found on and around the historic vessel under layers of silt in the Solent.

Since opening in 2013, the Mary Rose Museum has welcomed more than one million visitors.
