Give a little it'll mean a lot

ACACIA Africa is asking all of its travellers who are finishing their tour in Cape Town to open their hearts and their backpacks and consider donating to SAVE. The SAVE Foundation is a registered non-profit organisation that works to enrich, educate, and empower various township and settlement communities, every donation going to families affected by the shack fires in the Dunoon and Morning Star housing areas on the outskirts of South Africa's Mother City.

Sabine Behrmann, Cape Town Manager, at Acacia Africa, comments, “So far we have donated 20 camping mattresses, in excess of 30 pillows and an assortment of kitchen equipment including pots, utensils, serving bowls. Our tour leaders let clients on our southbound tours finishing in #CapeTown know that if they wish to donate their sleeping bags, pillows or other personal items (clothes, flash lights, books etc) they should simply leave them on the truck after checking into the lodge in Cape Town. We then pass them on to the SAVE Foundation who see that these items get to the needy."

While there's no better time to put the word out, the fires are frequent, so Acacia #Africa is hoping travellers will continue to give what they can over the festive season and beyond.

Sabine Behrmann, comments, "These families are often left with nothing at all so every donation goes a long way to helping them get back on their feet, and no matter how small, travellers will be making a very real impact on these people's lives."

Māori artwork inspires German backpackers

A Māori art workshop with social media experts proved an effective way to reach the German backpacker market, with the bloggers sharing their own kōwhaiwhai inspired designs.

The one day workshop in Berlin organised by Tourism New Zealand was a creative way to raise awareness about #NewZealand as a destination that has more to offer than landscapes and adventures.

Tourism New Zealand 'speaks' to mountain bikers & backpackers

TOURISM New Zealand has redeveloped their mountain biking hub on newzealand.com with new information written by mountain bikers providing insight into the range and quality of mountain bike trails available in #NewZealand.

Alongside this they have introduced a backpackers hub using backpackers experiences through images and video media to share with others thinking of making the same journey.

"The new hubs provide prospective travellers with an authentic experience of #mountainbiking and #backpacker travel that relates specifically to them,” says Mr Fraser.

New Zealand for work & play

THE number of backpackers visiting #NewZealand from the UK and Germany grew by 16 percent last year, accounting for more than 159,000 young travellers throwing packs on their backs and heading for New Zealand. This is supported by 8 percent growth in working holiday visa approvals which means that young people are also combining travel with work during their extended stay here.

Tourism New Zealand has joined up with STA for the new campaign, headlined “Play More Every day, Work and Travel.” The campaign is targeting young travellers who are planning to come to New Zealand this spring. The campaign includes digital marketing and shop window advertising, supported by travel agent training webinars and STA’s “flight and adventure” promotional deals.

The backpacker market, 18-to-24 year olds, is a valuable visitor segment for New Zealand accounting for about 11 percent of total international visitors and visitor spend. As well as staying longer, backpackers also travel to more regions around New Zealand than the average visitor which fits Tourism New Zealand’s drive to encourage greater regional dispersal of visitors.
