A relaxed start to your journey

LUFTHANSA passengers will now be able to start their journey feeling more relaxed: From now on, they will benefit from an automatic check-in procedure for all flights within Germany and to destinations in Europe.

The boarding pass for flights booked up to 24 hours before departure will then be sent automatically to the passenger 23 hours before departure – with no need for any manual check-in. This saves time and makes travel preparations easier.

In order to use this new service, the Lufthansa customers only have to deposit their personal details in their Miles & More account or Lufthansa iD profile.

On the runway

FOLLOWING a record summer in which passenger numbers reached eight million in a 12 month period for the first time in its history, Bristol Airport will be seeking views later this month on how to meet demand for air travel over the next 30 years and more. Feedback will help shape Master Plan for 2050.

Currently the ninth busiest airport in the UK, and the fifth largest outside London, Bristol saw passenger numbers grow by more than 10 per cent in 2016. Passing the eight million milestone demonstrates continued strong demand for air travel to and from the South West of the UK, highlighting the need to begin investigating options for extending capacity beyond the current limit of 10 million passengers a year.

Self-service bag drop first in Stuttgart Airport

STUTTGART Airport announced the launch of smooth and fast self-service bag drop.

Passengers of the German low-cost airline Eurowings will be the first to enjoy the service, SITA Scan&Fly, which allows them to check-in and drop their bags quickly. Now passengers can check in their baggage in less than a minute which will result in fewer queues and a better passenger experience.

The first units are in Terminal 1 with plans to roll out in Terminal 3 over the coming months so that more airlines, and more of the 10.5 million passengers who use the airport each year, will enjoy the convenience.

My Cloud Hotel opens at Frankfurt Airport

GERMANY'S first transit hotel, located at Gate Z 25 in Terminal 1 at Frankfurt Airport, opened for business on March 6, 2017. Its proximity to the departure gates lets transit passengers stay at the hotel without having to leave the security zone and then quickly and conveniently board their onward flights. And in contrast to conventional hotels, they can book rooms for only a few hours if they like.

Passengers can find more information about the transit hotel and reservation options on the Frankfurt Airport travel homepage and under www.mycloud.de.

How not to be late at the gate . . .

AIRLINE passengers who are in danger of not getting to their departure gate in time might never have to miss a flight again. British Airways is developing a smartphone app which tracks the location of travellers and lets them know if they are running late.

The app will calculate whether someone has left enough time to make it to the gate from wherever they are in the airport. It will factor in their average walking speed so customers with a tendency to dawdle or who have children in tow are given more time than those who can move quickly.

Travellers who download the app must agree to share their location with the airline. Their phone will then show a series of warning messages that will urge them to hurry up if they have not allowed enough time. It also shows a map on the phone so passengers can find the quickest route through the airport.

Thousands of passengers miss flights every year and airlines are under strict pressure to shut gates and allow their aircraft to take off on schedule. They are hit with big fines if planes are delayed and have to remove the baggage of passengers who fail to show up.

Up in the air …

WORK has begun on re-shaping London City Airport’s Western Pier, which houses most of its departure gates.

Built in 1987, the airport was designed for tens of thousands of passengers, not the millions who use it today. The new Western Pier will be an open-plan space with modern seating, electronic boarding gates, workspaces, quiet areas, and charging points.

The area will increase in size by approximately 84 percent, with space for new retail and food and beverage outlets, and accommodate 600 additional seats.

The work will be completed by summer, 2016.

Up in the air ….

SPAIN’S low-cost carrier, Vueling Airlines, has launched a service between Barcelona and Birmingham Airport. Vueling will initially operate three weekly services, rising to five a week during the peak summer months.

William Pearson, Birmingham Airport’s aviation development director, said: ‘The carrier will add more than 27,000 seats to Barcelona from Birmingham and give passengers a choice of more than 140 destinations on the Vueling network across Europe, Africa, and the Middle East.’

#Flights are on sale now with a lead-in fare of €54.99 (£39.57) via vueling.com and ba.com or travel agents.

WESTJET has started flights to the UK from its hub in Halifax, Nova Scotia.
To mark its first service to Britain, WestJet worked with the world’s last dedicated hand-crafted tartan mill, D.C. Dalgliesh in Selkirk, Scotland, to design a commemorative tartan in the airline’s distinctive blue and teal corporate colours. In addition to producing neck ties, cufflinks, and scarves, WestJet decaled two aircraft with the same tartan.

AIR FRANCE has confirmed that it will operate an additional weekly Paris-Havana flight from October 2015, increasing its service to 11 weekly departures to Cuba during winter 2015.
