Game of Thrones in Tapestry

A brand new Tourism Ireland campaign will showcase Northern Ireland once again as Game of Thrones® Territory to millions of fans worldwide.

The campaign, which is supported by Tourism NI, will also be rolled out – by Tourism NI – in Northern Ireland and the Republic of Ireland.

This year’s campaign is bigger than ever before – featuring a 77-metre long, Bayeux-style tapestry which tells the story so far from season 1 to season 6 in #gameofthrones. The tapestry brings to life the trials and tribulations of the show’s characters in its most epic and famous scenes – complete with blood red weddings, golden Lannister hair, emerald green wildfire, cold blue White Walkers and jet black crows.

The tapestry will be woven from one enormous piece of linen supplied by Thomas Ferguson’s in Banbridge, one of the last surviving linen mills in Northern Ireland – giving fans a chance to re-visit all the key events which led to the season 7 premiere.

John McGrillen, CEO of Tourism NI; Niall Gibbons, CEO of Tourism Ireland; and Kathryn Thomson, CEO of the Ulster Museum, at the launch of the 2017 Game of Thrones campaign in the Ulster Museum, Belfast.

From Brazil to New Zealand

CULT Brazilian travel show Lugar Incomum has dedicated eight episodes entirely to #NewZealand. In total, a whopping 12 hours of New Zealand footage will be screened to over 7.2 million people in #Brazil over eight weeks.

The crew, including the host, Brazilian superstar Didi Wagner visited New Zealand late last year and spent 20 days experiencing Christchurch, Queenstown, Wellington, Rotorua, Waikato and Auckland.

Tourism New Zealand took full advantage of the show’s airtime and built a significant marketing campaign around it including amplified advertising in Brazil featuring the show’s host Didi Wagner.

“Brazil is a market showing steady growth and with direct flights to New Zealand now arriving three times a week from nearby Buenos Aires with plans to extend, the region has really opened up.”

Research shows us that the Brazilian market are keen to travel to countries where they can visit beaches and urban areas and experience arts, culture, adventure activities and good wine and food.

“New Zealand offers all these things in abundance so it was good to be able to show off a range of regions across the country through the episodes. This supports our work to spread visitation across the country.”

Global showcase for Western Australia’s islands

SOME of Western Australia’s islands and coastlines will be showcased to national and international audiences in a television series supported by the state government through ScreenWest.

Culture and Arts Minister John Day has toured Rottnest Island with the WA production team and met British actor Martin Clunes, who will host the ‘Islands of Oz’ series,

‘While Rottnest is a popular local institution, many West Australians might not have explored Carnac Island and the Abrolhos Islands,’ says Mr Day. ‘Now all of these will have international exposure.’

The series will feature 12 islands around #Australia.

£15 million in camera cash for Tenerife

A TOTAL of regional and international production companies chose #Tenerife as the location for their #movie and television show filming last year – 20 more than in 2014.

Attracted by the island's tax incentives, variety of landscapes, and 3,000 hours of sunshine a year, the productions helped Tenerife to generate record revenues of €19 million in 2015 (£15.38 million).

As well as helping international production companies with locations, permits, and local contacts, the Tenerife Film Commission provides advice on how they can benefit from up to 35% tax allowances – one of the Canary Islands' main tax incentives for audio-visual productions, along with reduced rates of Value Added Tax.

Tenerife has welcomed 1,126 local and international productions since 2000.

End in sight for Coronation Street tours

CORONATION STREET tours at Quay Street, Manchester are to close on December 31 this year.

The tour opened last year for a six month period, but due to public demand it was given an extended run. Since opening, the attraction has had more than 500,000 visitors to the site where #CoronationStreet was filmed before its move to MediaCity.

Visitors can explore behind the scenes of the sound stage studio featuring the green room, dressing rooms, interior sets such as The Rovers Return, and the backlot set of Coronation Street's cobbles.

James Penfold, ITV’s controller of partnerships, said: ‘The tour at Quay Street was always for a limited time, and the demand has exceeded all our expectations. However, all good things have to come to an end.’

Tour tickets are available at www.ticketmaster.co.uk/coronationstreet, and more information can be found at www.coronationstreettour.co.uk
