A Taste of Kakadu

AUSTRALIA'S premier Indigenous food festival, A Taste of Kakadu, will be staged from 18 to 27 May 2018, serving up a menu of ancient cuisine with a modern twist. This year’s festival will see the region’s best Indigenous chefs showcasing their culinary creations at remarkable locations, all celebrating the traditional culture and breathtaking scenery of #Kakadu National Park.

Over ten days, visitors can embark on guided foraging walks where ‘super’ foods and delicacies such as Kakadu plums can be enjoyed, dine on crocodile, fish and buffalo cooked in spectacular ground ovens, and glide along the famed barramundi-filled rivers while enjoying bush tucker-inspired canapes.

Celebrate the cultural heritage of Vietnam

HELD every other year since 2000, the Hue Festival is Vietnam's most ambitious cultural extravaganza. Artists from dozens of foreign countries will perform alongside traditional Vietnamese artists and include traditional musicians from Korea, lion dancers from Okinawa, folk dancers from Poland, contortionists from Mongolia, French rockers, Colombian drummers and a singer-songwriter from Israel among others.

About 250,000 visitors attended the 2016 Festival, increasing from the 192,500 who attended in 2014. Tickets range in price from 50,000 VND (US $2.50) to 2 million VND (US $100).

Ghana launches campaign to develop domestic tourism

AS part of its objective to develop domestic tourism, through Ghanaian culture and creative arts, the #Ghana Tourism Authority under the auspices of the Ministry of Tourism, Arts and Culture and its partner agencies has outdoored the “See Ghana, Eat Ghana, Wear Ghana, Feel Ghana” campaign in a bid which also aimed at igniting the ‘’I am Ghanaian’’ spirit.

The campaign which was launched in the gardens of the Christiansburg castle, a former slave holding and administrative seat of colonial government in demonstration of Ghanaian ownership of her heritage and destiny, seeks to invoke the spirit of nationalism through sounds, distinct sights and the fusion of traditional food drawn from each of the 10 regions of Ghana.

The multimedia integrated campaign is expected to provide a platform for existing cultural and historic events such as traditional festivals and new initiatives like PANAFEST.

It’s Christmas … get me out of here!

RESEARCH by Travelbag, a tailor-made holiday specialist, suggests that Christmas advertising, festive shop displays, and hosting Christmas dinner for families are some of the reasons for Brits choosing to flee abroad for the Xmas holiday season.

Travelbag’s study found that 39% of UK adults have spent Christmas abroad, with almost a quarter admitting they did so to escape their families, the whole idea of Christmas, or taking part in Christmas traditions.

While 37% leave the UK to visit family who live abroad, a further 18% follow the sunshine as they leave the country because of the weather. Fifteen percent just like the idea of spending Christmas in a different country to experience foreign traditions.

Of those surveyed, 37% said avoid Christmas in the UK every year, followed by a third who escape every other year, and 22% who say they’ve done it couple of times.

Some (16%) of those escaping the country are not fans of festive TV advertisement; they wish they could leave the country as soon as the John Lewis Christmas ad and Coca-Cola Trucks are screened. A further 15% would leave the country the moment they see shops putting up Christmas trees in their windows. Many say the jolly TV advertising and programmes are their least favourite aspects of the season.

From the Ministry of Strange Events …

WE all know about Glastonbury, but have you heard of …

The World Bog Snorkelling Championships, Llanwrtyd Wells, Powys, Wales –
August 30: Most festival-goers hope to keep their wellies clean this summer, but some relishing the muddier side of festival season.

This sport – if it is a sport – consists of jumping into a water-filled trench in a bog and swimming two lengths as fast as possible. It attracts competitors from all over the world, some from as far away as New Zealand.

Tar Barrels, Ottery St. Mary, East Devon – November 5: A tradition which has continued for hundreds of years and sees locals holding flaming barrels of tar running through the crowds. Seventeen barrels are carried through the streets.

British Lawn Mowing Championships, Coneyhurst West Sussex – September 26-27: Like many potty ideas, lawn mower racing was dreamt up over a pint in a pub in 1973 … can you tell? The British Lawn Mower Racing Association organizes races all over the UK, enabling grown men and women enjoy the sheer thrill of racing modified lawn mowers. It’s not as expensive as motor racing.

To enter, your mower has to be approved for use in a particular class of racing, stamped, and given a log book and race number.

Up Helly Aa, Lerwick, Scotland – January 26: Dating back to the 1840s Europe’s biggest fire festival lights up a dark winter’s day in January. Celebrating Shetland’s Viking heritage, one of the biggest draws is the Jarl Squad, a band of modern-day Viking warriors who make various appearances throughout the day.

Dunmow Flitch Trials, Great Dunmow, Essex – July 9, 2016: Originating, it’s believed, in the 12th century, the trials exist to award a flitch of bacon to married couples if they can satisfy a judge and jury of six maidens and six bachelors that in the previous year and a day they have not – not even once – ‘wisht themselves unmarried again'. The winning couple get the bacon and are carried through the village on the shoulders of local men. Do you fancy your chances?  You’ve got a year in which to work out a way of convincing the jury. Oh, and that flitch word: It’s a side, or a steak cut from the side, of an animal or fish.
