Virgin America boosts Hawaii schedule

VIRGIN AMERICA has expanded its #Hawaii service with the launch of daily non-stop flights from Los Angeles to Honolulu. In June, the airline's Hawaii schedule will grow again with daily non-stop flights from LA to Maui.

Hawaii remains the 'most wanted' #destination by members of Virgin America's Elevate loyalty program and continues to be the number one tourism destination from the West Coast, with more than 3.5 million visitors in 2015.

‘Congratulations to Virgin America for making Hawaii easily accessible to its customers in Southern California and expanding its network for connections to major markets nationwide,’ said George Szigeti, president and CEO of the Hawaii Tourism Authority.

Alaska Air Group to buy Virgin America in $2.6 billion deal

ALASKA AIR GROUP is to buy Virgin America for $2.6 billion, which will make it the top carrier on the US west coast. Richard Branson, who started the airline in 2007 as an off-shoot of his UK-based Virgin Group, will get a cash windfall of approximately $550 million from the sale.

The deal will create the fifth-largest US airline after a decade of mergers that have shrunk the industry to a handful of companies. The top four control more than 80 percent of the US travel market.

Virginia welcomes music lovers …

EVERY style of music is represented with a variety festivals across the Commonwealth of #Virginia. Lovers of #Bluegrass and classic #Countrymusic can attend events such as the Richmond Folk Festival or the Old Fiddlers’ Convention in Galax, the largest and oldest of its kind in the world, while fans of slightly more modern music can attend events such as the Bristol Rhythm and Roots to see the big names.

‘We have so many great music festivals in our own backyard, from the Shenandoah Valley Music Festival to the Richmond Jazz Festival,’ says Virginia Tourism president Rita Clenny. ‘Virginia is so rich in music history, but it also attracts mainstream artists.’

Music festivals in Virginia this year:

• American Roots Music Series (Bluegrass), Staunton – August 2, 16 & 30

Accolade for Virgin America

FOR the third consecutive year, Virgin America has been recognized as the number one carrier in the Airline Quality Rating (AQR) report, an annual study of US domestic airline performance conducted by professors at Wichita State University and Embry-Riddle Aeronautical University.

The rating provides a comparative ranking based on key airline metrics important to air travellers: on-time performance, customer complaints, denied boarding, and mishandled bags.

Since its 2007 launch, Virgin America has created more than 2,800 jobs and expanded its network to include Austin, Boston, Cancun, Chicago, Dallas, Fort Lauderdale, Las Vegas, Los Angeles, Newark, New York, Orlando, Portland, San Diego, San Francisco, Seattle, and Washington D.C.
