DISABLED passengers on planes and those with reduced mobility have more rights as new European Union (EU) regulations came into force this month (December). They say that disabled passengers are legally entitled to assistance throughout their flights, including help when travelling through an airport, boarding or disembarking.
The UK’s Civil Aviation Authority (CAA) has been granted full legal authority to ensure carriers and airports comply with the laws. Those who fail to meet the requirements will be liable to prosecution although it is expected the majority of cases will be handled before court action is taken.
The regulations include provision for clear information on websites for those with disabilities.
CAA regulatory policy director Iain Osborne said a review of websites had found some were “often unclear and lacking in detail”.
“We have worked with the industry to make sure it is presented in a much clearer fashion and just one click from the homepage,” he said. “Most airlines and airports have now made these improvements. Where this is not the case, the CAA will work with the airlines and airports involved to bring them into full compliance.”
