Drownings as selfie craze gets fatal

THRILL SEEKERS are visiting the coastlines of Britain with the intention of taking selfies in the most dangerous poses, and the craze is often landing them in trouble … many are ending up dead. 

The Royal National Lifeboat Institution (RNLI) reports that the desire to catch the perfect pose has led to the deaths of 92 people over the past two years. The RNLI reports saving almost 385 lives in near fatal incidents.

People go far too close to slippery, unstable, and uneven cliff edges to take their picture with the coastline in the background. Many have fallen into the sea.

Get beach smart!

BECAUSE many sea rescues involve young swimmers and bodyboarders, the Royal National Lifeboat Institution (RNLI) has produced a safety pack to help keep children safe when they’re out having fun in the surf.

The Get Beach Smart for summer pack – which can be downloaded from www.beachsmart.org.uk – includes tips for parents, a wave guide for the children, and stickers that can be attached to bodyboards and beach bags.

#RNLI lifeguards went to the aid of more than 7,900 children on Britain’s beaches last year, and this year will have lifeguards on 220 beaches.

What’s on … in Cornwall?

Mariners sing at the Falmouth International Sea Shanty Festival – Lively music is guaranteed at the Falmouth International Sea Shanty Festival (June 13-15). 

There will be 44 sea shanty groups performing 261 hours of singing at more than 20 venues. As well as celebrating Cornish maritime history, the event raises thousands of pounds for the Royal National Lifeboat Institution (RNLI).

Polperro Festival –The 9-day Polperro Festival (June 14-22) takes place over the summer solstice. It includes a carnival parade, comedy night, treasure hunts, and a solstice bonfire along with street theatre, live music and dancing. The local artist’s colony is also organizing an art day.
