Smarten up, Malta’s taxi drivers told

#MALTA’S Taxi drivers will have to wear uniforms, issue receipts and be of ‘good repute’ under amended regulations – setting higher standards for drivers, vehicles, and even passengers – published by the government. 

  • Drivers will have to wear uniforms and identity tags 
  • Those who get 500 penalty points on their driver’s licence will have their taxi permit suspended 
  • Taxis must have ‘ample head space and leg room’, working air conditioning, trackers, and emergency buttons, which should be displayed well within reach of both passengers and drivers 
  • Passengers found to have ‘soiled’ the interior of the taxi can be charged up to €50 (£37.60). 
  • Drivers cannot apply for a taxi permit while serving a prison sentence
