Hastings pier to re-open

HASTINGS pier closed for safety reasons in 2008 and ravaged by fire two years later will be re-opened next summer, thanks to an £11.4 million repair job.

Thought to be the first of the 99 piers in Britain that were built for entertainment –rather than as landing stages – the 910ft-long was built in 1872.

In the 1960s, its ballroom was the venue for concerts by Jimi Hendrix, Bob Marley, Pink Floyd, and the Rolling Stones.

Once back in service, the pier will have a Jamie Oliver 'Fifteen' restaurant, circuses, plays, concerts, film festivals, and farmers' markets.
