Foreign affairs

IF you had a holiday this summer on the #Amalficoast, or anywhere in #Italy, Catie Costa’s first novel – Love on the Rocks: A Positano Tale – might bring back some memories of sweltering days on the beach and moonlit nights filled with pasta, prosecco, limoncello and, who knows, that other great Italian invention, passione. And if your Italian break was only half as interesting as the #Positano vacations that inspired Ms Costa, you too could turn it into a 430-page book.

In this romcom romp of a novel, 30-something best friends Kit and Bridget flee their humdrum lives in the States to spend a summer in Positano, the Pearl of the Amalfi, for a vacation filled with frivolously expensive and tantalizingly wonderful experiences … principally the food and the dangers lurking down on the rocky beach: Italian men.

Their summer get-away flies by, thanks to a wedding, a death threat, a missing teen, a lunatic Australian, love on the rocks, a pregnancy, and lots of sparkly prosecco. But the women agree that if there was heartache and confusion – which is what might be waiting for middle class American women when they fall for the charms of Positano pizza chefs – there was also happiness and self-discovery.

‘Amazing things happen when you can get out of your own way and experience life what it is,’ says Ms Costa.
