THERE’S undoubtedly been either mis-management
or under-staffing – probably both – at the British government’s passport
bureaucracy.
But whatever the extent of the backlog (and there’s claim and
counter-claim about the numbers), people who have booked a holiday without
having a full six months validity on their current passports, and those
applying for their first passports, have only themselves to blame if they
imagined that getting the little red book could be done as speedily as getting
a supermarket loyalty card.
Leaving it until the last minute is the triumph of hope over common sense, and
it’s left many with flight tickets but, sadly, not the document that allows
them to leave the country … and get into others.
