THE annual Port Eliot Festival (July 24-27) in
Cornwall is a laid-back celebration of words, music, ideas, nature, food, and
fashion.
‘Most festivals now, literature festivals in
particular, are high pressure and high profile,’ says the novelist Hanif
Kureishi. ‘Port Eliot is a sort of up-market pop festival … It’s fun… It’s nice
for the kids. It’s a lovely place, it’s just very relaxing.’
Writers and artists who have appeared at the
festival over the years include Sarah Waters, Jarvis Cocker, photographer Martin
Parr, Maria Alvarez and Alain de Botton.
