1,000 jobs cut as Monarch closes East Midlands flights

MONARCH AIRLINES will cease flying from its base at East Midlands Airport by the end of April 2015. The airline will also cut 1,000 jobs as it restructures, effecting around a third of its present workforce.

Through a review of its network strategy, the airline says it is focusing on offering customers greater flight frequency and more sociable departure times to short-haul European destinations from its main UK bases. Its fleet will shrink from 42 to 30 aircraft.

The change is part of the next phase in Monarch’s transformation to become a scheduled European low-cost carrier.
