Is Egypt safe?

WHILE the Egyptian government steps up its efforts to entice tourists to what it calls the “real” Egypt beyond Cairo, conflicting travel warnings from other governments is confusing and worrying for people who have booked holidays there.

Britain’s Foreign and Commonwealth Office (FCO) advised this week against all travel to North Sinai due to recent terrorist attacks, and all but essential travel to South Sinai, with the exception of the area within the Sharm el Sheikh perimeter barrier. The FCO says improved security measures are in place to protect the Sharm el Sheikh resort areas. It says Egyptian military are protecting Sharm el Sheikh airport, and have set up checkpoints around the perimeter of Sharm el Sheikh and throughout the South Sinai area.

This advice, however, means that holidaymakers wanting to take excursions out from Sharm el Sheikh into the Sinai Desert – for desert biking and to see the historic sites – will be doing so in an area declared dangerous by the FCO.

Meanwhile, the German, Belgian, Swiss and Australian governments have advised against all travel to Egypt, Sharm el Sheikh included.
