No sea, please, I’m British!

BRITAIN’S HISTORY has been shaped by the seas that surround it, but it seems many Brits prefer to stay firmly on dry land when on holiday. A survey by online travel agent On the Beach has found that while 67 percent of British holidaymakers consider themselves confident swimmers, almost a third won't swim in the sea. The survey of 1,500 people revealed that more than a quarter of British holidaymakers say they are not confident in the water, with a further seven percent saying they are unable to swim at all.

One in ten holidaymakers won't swim in the sea because 'it's too cold', while four percent don’t like swimming in the sea because they believe it's 'too dirty'.

In research by the Amateur Swimming Association, one in ten parents said their child swam only during their holiday, and 39 percent said their child was not participating in any type of swimming lessons.

Alistair Daly, Chief Marketing Officer at On the Beach commented: ‘It's seems a shame that many people are not confident in the water, be it in the pool or sea, which can make a huge difference to the enjoyment of a holiday, especially for children. Most hotels offer fantastic swimming pools for both adults and kids, and Spain alone has 550 Blue Flag beaches which means that not only are the beaches up to standard, but the water has been tested for its cleanliness and bathing quality.’
