When the world goes green

ST PATRICK’S DAY is celebrated thousands of miles beyond Ireland’s borders.

While Dublin is one of the biggest venues for parades and celebrations in honour of the country’s national saint, along with parties across Ireland, the largest parade worldwide is in New York, where 150,000 people march on Fifth Avenue. St. Patrick's Day parades began in Manhattan in 1762.

Boston, another US city with a large American-Irish population, has a lively schedule for St Patrick’s Day, as does Chicago, where the river is dyed green. 'This spectacular transformation ranks right up there with the parting of the sea by Moses,' says the city's St Patrick's Day Committee.

In London, more than 100,000 people are expected to take part in celebrations and a parade finishing in Whitehall. The London Eye will go green.
