How to beat the bed bugs

FANTASTIC SERVICES, a London domestic services provider, is warning people to take care that they do not bring bed bugs home with them from their holiday.

In July last year, the company’s booking line saw a 57 percent increase in bed bug enquiries, which correlated to people who had returned from a vacation overseas. It says the pattern is being repeated this year.

‘Already this summer, our pest control division has had numerous calls from customers fearing that they have brought bed bugs back with them from their holiday,’ says Rune Sovndahl, the company’s managing director.

Bed Bugs are small, flat, blood-sucking insects, attracted by human body heat and carbon dioxide. They nest in cracks and crevices in and around beds, and getting rid of them is difficult.

Fantastic Services have provided tips you can use to avoid bringing the pests home from holiday:

  • Use hard-sided luggage when you go on holiday. It doesn't have any seams where bed bugs may hide, and it’s completely sealed when closed.
  • Pack only clothing that can be laundered in a washing machine in warm to hot water.
  • Pack all your items in clear zip-locked bags and make sure they are sealed at all times, unless you need to get an item out.
  • Put your luggage on a rack away from the bed, wall, and furniture.
  • When you return home, vacuum the inside of your bag once it is unpacked.
  • Do what your mum always told you: don’t kick your clothes off and leave them on the floor. Scoop them and bag them!
