Time off with your furry friend

IT comes as no surprise that the "workaholic" mindset of many Americans can affect people's willingness to take vacation days for traveling. However, work isn't the only culprit hindering American's travel. A study by Project: Time Off found the three top reasons why people don't use their vacation days to travel are cost, children and pets.

Despite citing pets as a barrier to travel, 60 percent of pet owners surveyed said they would like to break the working routine and explore. Pets can enhance the lives of their owners and this should apply to travel as well, so Mars Petcare is providing a host of resources to help cities become more pet-friendly. For example, the Better Cities For Pets program aims to make it easier to explore new places with your pet in tow.

"Traveling can be stressful for people and pets," said Jessa Paschke, behavior and training specialist at Mars Petcare. "Following simple and proactive travel tips can do wonders for your dog's behavior, happiness and health."

Consider these four tips to make traveling with your pet easier and learn more about how to join the movement to make cities more pet-friendly at bettercitiesforpets.com.

1. Plan your pet into the itinerary – Planning before a trip is key to keeping yourself and all travel companions (including furry ones) organized and ready. Prepare for an upcoming trip with a detailed packing list and map out dog-friendly locations on your itinerary to help keep your pup's needs top of mind.

2. Consider a road trip – Airports and airlines are two of the top challenges that pet-owners cite when it comes to traveling with pets, so, if possible, think about driving to your destination. Taking stops along the way to see the sights and give your pal a break to stretch his or her legs can go a long way toward health and happiness.

3. Seek out pet-friendly accommodations – Research pet-friendly hotels so your furry friend can stay with you. Certain pet-friendly locations will likely already have dog or cat amenities, but it doesn't hurt to be prepared and bring along items from home to help your pet cozy up. Bringing along his or her bed or a blanket is one way to make every place feel like home.

4. Don't forget treats – Packing your pet's favorite things on a trip can help keep him or her calm and comfortable. Besides a favorite toy, bringing along dog treats.

Airbnb moves into the workplace

THE meetings market (or MICE as it is called) is the next most lucrative sector for hotels and is the slowest in tech adoption. So it’s unsurprising that disruptive travel companies are shaking up the market. For independent hotels, this means both opportunity and increased competition.

Airbnb finally announced a few days ago that Airbnb for Work is expanding into services and experiences for a workplace audience to “help foster a sense of belonging—even at work.” We say finally because for those who have been monitoring Airbnb’s growth, it’s been clear that the company has been looking to expand into the workplace. Back in April 2018, Airbnb for Events was launched, aimed specifically for planners. The tool encourages attendees to book Airbnb accommodations through an interactive map of Airbnb listings embedded directly on the event site.

Airbnb reports this month that 700,000 companies have had employees sign up and book with the company’s business platform. Of all these companies, more than 300,000—up from 275,000 a few weeks ago—are directly engaged with Airbnb to help manage their travel.

Until now, #India was one of more than 70 countries where homosexuality is criminalised. Product & Marketing Director, Out in India, Mark Snoxell, made comment “For a number of reasons, many LGBT travellers boycott countries where being gay is illegal, so now we can expect the interest to grow quickly.”

Hit the Links in France

WITH interest in this year’s Ryder Cup at an all-time high, the biannual event is raising the profile of France as a golfing destination, says European Waterways. Scheduled for L'Albatros Course in Saint-Quentin-en-Yvelines, just 20 miles from Paris, the #RyderCup pits the best of European golfers against top American players. It is being held in #France for only the second time in history, bringing new appreciation for the country’s many world-class golf courses.

A number of vessels cruise just hours from the site of this year’s Ryder Cup, allowing guests to “hit the links” in regions that include Burgundy and the Canal du Midi, as well as neighboring courses in the Loire Valley. Between rounds of golf, guests can also participate in culinary excursions, wine tastings and exclusive tours of castles and stately chateaux.

A small country with a huge heart

A
small country with a huge past,
Cambodia, a popular holiday destination among travellers from the USA, Canada, Australia and the UK, has seen growth double through the years offering tour operators the opportunity to market their own specially crafted vacation packages. Vietnamese Private Tours offers its own tours and trip deals in 2019 taking advantage of the growing number of travellers to the region.

Its rich history is challenging, enchanting and ever present. Voted the world‘s friendliest nation, the Cambodian people smile their way throughout the day. Its blossoming art scene and funky bars and restaurants contrast nicely with its ancient temples and colonial decay plus its throbbing cities and island beaches are the perfect place to relax and play.

#Cambodia is warm to hot year round with a rainy season between June and October. Don’t be too put off by the term ‘rainy’ though. It’s actually a great time of the year to visit. The temperature is a little cooler and the land lush green. Most of the downpours are in the afternoon or at night and they only last for a couple hours or so making them easy to plan around.

Sao Paulo Art Biennial: A reason to explore

THE 33rd Sao Paulo’s Art Biennial opened its doors to the public on September 7 and will remain open until December 9th, 2018. It’s the second largest biennial in the world, just behind the inspirational Venetian Biennial, bringing over 500 thousand viewers per edition.

The Biennial alone would be enough reason to jump on a plane, but for art lovers, the country is an adventure to be explored. Curated by Gabriel Perez-Barreiro, Spanish director, chief-curator and Art History Master, the 33th Biennial was built on the idea of privileging the individual experience of the spectator on the appreciation of art, where the artist is not only exhibiting its work but also curating it, hoping to bring a bigger and better communication between viewer and artist.

Magical places to retire to

A new report from the editors at Internationalliving.com points to five jaw-droppingly beautiful places to enjoy a magical retirement, for less. In the right places around the world, retirees can combine a fulfilling, affordable lifestyle in stunning surrounds. International Living’s report delves into five beautiful retirement havens—in Portugal, Mexico, Ireland, Peru, and Cambodia—that offer spectacular surroundings, high quality of life, and affordable costs.

A favorite summer retreat of the former royal family, Sintra is full of national treasures. Just a 40-minute train journey from Lisbon, Portugal’s capital, its palaces, mansions, and architectural follies deliver an enchanted setting.

For those who dream of living a cosmopolitan lifestyle in a gorgeous setting, Cusco—Peru’s most historic city—is a front runner. This 500-year-old colonial gem has ample domed churches and ancient, pedestrian-only cobblestone streets.

The west coast of Ireland is enormously inviting, with sandy coves tucked away between cliffs and rocky headlands. The difficult thing will be deciding where to settle—from the heathery mountains of Donegal down to the craggy peninsulas of Kerry, the entire western seaboard delivers a bonanza of scenic splendors. Spanned by a cycling or driving route known as the Wild Atlantic Way.

San Miguel de Allende, Mexico was officially founded in 1541, getting rich when silver was discovered in the nearby states of Zacatecas and San Luis Potosi. Supplying the mines and catering to the workers and travelers passing through brought wealth to the city. Plus many of the newly rich silver barons chose to live there. Today, its historic center is pretty much the same as it was 250 years ago, and in 2008 San Miguel was declared a UNESCO World Heritage City.

Siem Reap, Cambodia, the exotic sights and sounds of the Kingdom of Wonder shoots Cambodia to the top of many peoples’ wish list. The nation’s rich history, traditions and culture; its ancient temples, royal palaces and saffron-robed monks attract visitors and expats both. Known as Cambodia’s “temple town,” Siem Reap, in north-western Cambodia, is surrounded by the ruins of the ancient temple city.

Lighting up the harbour

CELEBRATING its 110th year, the Newport Beach Christmas Boat Parade will take place December 19-23.

The Newport Beach Christmas Boat Parade began at the turn of the century when John Scarpa, an Italian gondolier; and Joseph Beek, developer of Beacon Bay, the Balboa Ferry Line, and the principal force in the early development of Balboa Island, started the tradition of lighting boats in the harbor.

One of the longest-running holiday traditions in the country, the parade has been hailed by The New York Times as one of the nation's top ten holiday happenings and earning Newport Beach the rank of "#2 City in the Nation for Holiday Lights" by Yahoo! Travel. Home to the world's largest small-yacht harbor, Newport Beach pays homage to its iconic boating culture through a fleet of wonderfully decorated yachts, boats, kayaks and canoes motoring along a 14-mile course.

Prestigious Travel Award for The Women's Travel Group

THE Women's Travel Group has again won a prestigious travel award from Travel Weekly Magazine. The Silver Magellan Award for 2018 honors the company's outreach to solo women looking for a travel group to join.

The Women's Travel Group has offered small group quality tours for women for 26 years and often chooses new and unusual destinations for women who have already traveled a great deal: Iran, Namibia, S Africa, India, Albania etc. Hotels are 4 star, meals in restaurants and guides are trained to cater to the intellectual needs of women travelers. Trips sometimes have speakers and always have unique visits.

The market for women's travel is barely touched by the large travel corporations; this boutique tour operator tries to fill that gap while providing hand holding for those taking their first trip. Some of the trips are co-organized by Sita World Tours of Encino CA, who have worked with The Group for many years.

Study and Travel in New Zealand for free

GO Overseas and Education New Zealand are running the 5th annual promotion to offer five full-tuition #scholarships to study abroad in #NewZealand.

Five well-deserving students will have the opportunity to live abroad, expand their cultural competencies and add a valuable asset to their resume - all for free. In addition, STA Travel will be sponsoring two of the student’s round-trip flights. Two undergraduate and three graduate students will be selected to win this year’s scholarships.

The paperless scholarship application is unlike a traditional essay format. The goal is to get students engaged and excited about New Zealand from the get-go so even if they don’t win the scholarship, they will still be interested in studying abroad.
